Coffee and Chemistry

Ah, fall. How I loved fall. I loved everything about fall, how the leaves crunched under my combat boots, how the air smelled like cinnamon and bonfires everywhere you went, all the pumpkin spice flavored things, warm drinks like coffee, tea, and apple cider, honey crisp apples, the colors of the leaves, sweaters. The list goes on and on, but one thing is for sure: fall is my favorite season and always has been.

I was walking home to my college apartment that I shared with my best friend, Zoey. I had one ear-bud in and was listening to my Disney playlist. About halfway through, I got a call.

"Hello?" I asked, answering the phone.

"Hey Autumn!" Yeah my name is Autumn. Funny how fall is also my favorite season.

"Hey Zoey, what's up?"

"I'm coming back from my class. Want to stop by our favorite cafe to get coffee and pastries?" She asked.

"Sure. I'm down for a pumpkin spice latte and chocolate chip cookie." I laughed.

"Cool. See you in fifteen!" She said and then hung up. I laughed and turned my playlist back on.

When I got to the cafe, Zoey wasn't there yet. I shrugged and walked over to our usual table by the window. I put my backpack down on the table and sat down. Sighing, I grabbed my chemistry textbook and homework. Sadly, my college required that you take a science class. I wish I went with biology or something. I'm an English major, not a science major, and Zoey wasn't any help she was majoring in music and education.

I ran my fingers through my shoulder length wavy light brown hair. When I'm anxious or frustrated, I always play with my hair. It's a habit of mine, along with shaking my legs and biting my nails.

As I'm about to give up, I hear someone cough from behind me. I turned around in my chair to see a guy standing behind me. He was tall and looked around my age, so 18 or 19. He had very defined facial features; he had a chiseled jaw, nice nose, small pink lips which he had slightly agape, large piercing grey eyes and nice shaped eyebrows. His hair was dark brown with blonde tips. It was wavy and brushed back, however as he looked over my shoulder, a few pieces fell across his face, giving it this messy windswept look. He had fair skin and rosy cheeks, large round black glasses framed his piercing grey eyes. "Um... yes?" I stuttered out, finally finding my voice.

"Oh, I'm sorry." He said sheepishly. His voice was light. It wasn't deep, like most guys my age, and it seemed to suit his appearance. "I was just walking to a table when I saw you struggling with your chemistry homework. I thought I could help, um I'm taking chemistry and I'm a science major, so I'm pretty good at it."

"Sure." I shrugged. "My friend won't be here for like another five minutes. Not that she would be of any help, anyway."

He nodded and pulled up a chair next to me. He started explaining the problem, and by the end, I actually understood it. "Wow, you did way better than my professor." I laughed.

"Thanks." He mumbled sheepishly, a small blush appearing on his face. "Um, what college do you go to?"

"Penn State." I replied, putting my books in my bag.

"Really?" He exclaimed. "Me too. I'm a freshman."

"Same" I laughed. "What's your name, by the way?"

"Myles." He replied. "What's yours?"

"Autumn." I said, smiling.

"Autumn D'Angelo?" He asked, surprised. "Your in my chemistry class!"

"Really?" I laughed. "You're Myles Fox? I've never actually seen you. I just hear your name when Professor Gomez takes roll."

"Same!" He smiled. "I got to go. I promised I would meet my brother at the park. Could I, by any chance, get your number? You know, in case you need help with chemistry again?"
