Josephina Danielle Cameron:
"That is it? You just don't want it?" William asked his son in disbelief. I knew this wasn't going to go very well. After I told Justin that we would not be going to the barbeque he suggested we have a meeting and so here we were. Kane, being completely set on this just out and said he didn't want to be alpha of this pack. I'm glad I had a plan B to offer.
"Yes, that is it. If you cared even an ounce about me you could respect that," Kane said firmly.
It was obvious William wanted to discuss it more but he didn't. So he did have respect for his son, that was unexpected.
Justin asked, "Is this how Axle feels about being the Beta?"
Kane nodded, "Yeah. He is still pretty upset about what happened to Zaire on account of our pack members." It fell silent.
William sighed, "So much for retiring by the end of this year, huh Justin."
I said, "Actually, we have a proposition for you. See, I don't know if you've noticed but you have another child, and she has found her mate."
"She is only sixteen, that is too young," William said.
"She wouldn't know what to do," Justin agreed.
Kane said, "What do you mean she is too young? And she wouldn't know what to do? She has always been more interested in becoming an Alpha than me. She is ready for this."
"No, Kane, she is 16 years old. She is too young to be able to direct a pack."
I cleared my throat, "Excuse me but I've been directing a pack since I was fourteen, even if it is not technically a pack."
Kane said, "Have a little faith in Lauren, she knows what to do."
"Kane, you don't understand," William said with finality in his voice.
I said, "I do. You think that she is going to mess up and freak out?" He hesitantly nodded. I offered, "Then co-alpha?" They all looked at me confused.
I explained, "Co-Alpha is basically tell her what is happening. If she accepts than you let her run the pack but you have her run her ideas through you two. It will be like she works for you. This way, she and Knox will gain the experience they need to run a pack and if she makes a mistake you can see how well she fixes it by herself. It's like a test-run." William and Justin looked at each other.
"It may not be the best idea but it was the best I could come up with."
"It is a fantastic idea," William said. "Good job, Josie, I think we will gladly take your advice." I was surprised, almost as surprised as Justin and Kane that he complimented me.
"Thank you," I said, smiling. He nodded, smiling back, "Glad to have someone so smart apart of the family."
We stayed for dinner with no complications from anyone and Lauren was ecstatic to learn she had the opportunity to run the pack. Knox seemed just as happy. He sent a simple thank you nod to Kane who smiled in return.
When we finally were on our way back I was exhausted. Tomorrow we have school too. It was only eight o'clock but I was ready for bed. When we pulled up I noticed almost everyone out front in a circle. I furrowed my brows. They all glanced back at us when I pulled up on my motorcycle. I jumped off when I saw a boy I didn't recognize fighting with Daryl. I tackled him off of him. He easily flipped us, bringing back his fist to hit me but I caught it, flipping us over again and pulling out the knife from my boot, holding it to his throat and making him freeze along with everything else.
