It was 1922 in California, Kerr, Stuart & Co. had bought out a company and had started building steam engines there which one was named Luke and was sent to work out on a narrow-gauge railway in the huge state, however, this railway also crossed into Nevada and Oregon. Luke helped transport water and supplies for small businesses around the area, many of these towns were newly established so they didn't have too many supplies either and locals called him quite slow and didn't like the amount of noise he was making due to him singing and being so enthusiastic, keeping them up at night, though he didn't mind.

It is 1925, the railway he currently works on is put out of operation and bought by another railway and hears that he is going to the island of Sodor, being purchased due to some good feedback from the locals for being a hard worker, being put on a ship.

Luke gets on a ship and the ship ends up in Cuba where another engine is put on the ship, "Buenas noches". The engine is yellow, and Luke can't understand him but can tell the yellow engine is trying to start a conversation.

It is now December 1926, and the ship arrives in some Irish Port after many storms and delays, as well as the yellow engine getting to see Spain's coast. Luke finds out that a deal has been signed making Luke forced to work in Ireland due to him being bought by the Irish Free State making demands, as well as to make up some of the British' debt and the yellow engine to be repaired/renovated on the island, then being sent to Sodor.

The yellow engine was taken off the ship first and was taken off somewhere, Luke "never" saw the engine again. Luke was then taking off the ship and taken to a very small railway, transporting coal, he made lots of friends, people loved this engine.Luke helped make the local's spirits go up about Irish independence and show that Americans and the Irish are similar in ways.

It's 1943 and Luke gets retired, Luke shared jokes with other engines in the workshop where he was just sitting which made him so happy, and the people were so happy that they made sure that he never rusted, school children even came over to him after school to hear some jokes.Eventually, Luke keeps on getting moved and moved, he doesn't get too much people checking on him anymore and is unfamiliar with his surroundings.

It's 1975 and Luke is taken into a workshop and told that he is officially being sent to Sodor, he gets new parts and is shipped out to the port that he arrived on and those who he met so many years ago when he arrived on the small railway in Ireland was there to say goodbye, it was an emotional moment for him and that's when he saw the yellow engine again, this time, he didn't look like a scrap engine, he was also put on the ship, "Hola, Otra Vez". Luke knew what Hola meant. Luke arrives 10 days later on New Year's Day in Brendam Docks. He is so excited, after decades of waiting to arrive onto the island and being stuck in Ireland against his will. He begs the shipmen and Cranky to take him off first, and he thought it would be fair since the yellow engine went first when they arrived in Ireland. The shipmen and Cranky give in and pick Luke off first with Cranky accidently knocking the yellow engine into the sea... Luke is traumatized by this and then taken to the Blue Mountain Quarry by Donald even though it's still being built. Luke is so ashamed and goes into hiding, disappearing as it's under construction in an already constructed zone. Many years later, Skarloey puffs into a tunnel and finds a green engine, Luke. Skarloey and the Narrow Gauge engines become friendly with this engine and are now friends, hidden until a blue engine appears...
