CHAPTER ONE:
' lunatic with a gun 'Hayley stood in front of her new home, box in her hand. She stared at the house and compared it to the apartment she had in New York. This house was big and surrounded by grass and sand just like all the other ones. It had stairs that seemed to go on for a mile, and the door was an off-white color with carvings in it. The entire outside of the house was the same off-white color, and the porch was laid with dark wood. It had two pillars on each side.
Now, the apartment she had in New York, she much more preferred. Her apartment had the best view of the city, and it got super quiet at night, besides the quiet chatter of a few people and some cars driving by. Their apartment was huge. Way too big for just three people. There was her room, her parent's room, a guest room, an office, and a game room. And just down the block was where she did ballet. Her apartment was all white, with black and gold decor. That's what her parent's room looked like too. But Hayley's room was covered in cranberry red decor. That's her favorite color.
Her bedding was black though, and her picture frames were often white or black too. Her trophies from sports and ballet weren't red either, but they sat on a red shelf. Her mother and father liked simple, clean looking colors and decor. She liked chaotic, messy, exciting colors and decor.
Cranberry red is her favorite color because it can be taken so many ways. She likes that the color isn't too dark, but also isn't too bright. She likes that it sort of defines her personality. People look at cranberry red and see different color things. Some people think it's too bright, some think it's too dark. The fruit can be bitter, but likable, just like her.
The girl was taken away from her thoughts as she heard whooping and hollering. She turned back to see a rusted VW bus speeding past her house. She could only see the driver, but from the many voices, she figured there were other people in there.
The driver had fluffy brown hair that danced in the wind. He had a bandana tied around his neck, and a white shirt on. That's all she could observe in such a short amount of time.
"Come on," her father's hand clapped against her shoulder. "Let's get these boxes in so we can go over to my brother's house."
"Do I have to go?" Hayley questioned as she walked in the house with her father.
"Yes. This will be the first time you're meeting his kids and new wife." Elijah tells her. "Now, his daughter Sarah, she's the same age as you."
"Yippee." Hayley gave him a fake smile.
"Alright." He sighed, setting his box down and placing his hands on his daughter's shoulders. "I know you're not happy about this move, but this is going to be good for us. OBX is a nice place. You get to go down to the beach whenever, you won't be under high supervision like you used to be because this isn't New York. It's safe here, okay?"
