"A-Are you okay? You've been away for so long it worries me."
Jangmi melted into a melancholic smile as she placed her cup of ice cream on the stunted stool between both of them to give her fingers a break. Kobin looked down at the ice-cream and shook his head, disappointed. He had been nagging her about her choice of snack but it didn't matter.
"Let a girl have her ice-cream in peace." Jangmi frowned, sitting down next to him and pulling the ends of her hoodie tightly to fight the cold.
The wintry demons were clawing their way out of their holes, now biting skin. It wouldn't be long before it snowed. Jangmi looked up at the starry ceiling and winced. Another storming and merciless weather to war against. The battle seemed neverending.
"Of course." Kobin nodded, looking around the place as his fresh cheeks stood smitten to the chill too. "How'd you find a place like this?"
"I searched it up on the internet." Jangmi nodded sideways and bit her teeth to kill the jitter of the ice in her mouth. "It's nice, right?"
"It is pretty neat." His grin grew wider when he looked at the struggle on Jangmi's face with the ice. "I had been hoping for us to meet for a long time but you've been ignoring my texts. Have I done something to put you off?"
Her hands paused from putting another spoon in her mouth and she looked up at him, stretching her lips in a watery smile, "I'm sorry. I was busy."
"Yeah, no. It's fine. You just-you can tell me if you're busy. I am an understanding person when required." His brow lept up, an awkward smile hanging between the flushed cheeks. His cheekbones stood out against the wallowing eyes. He hadn't changed much, except for the little rusty hairstyle. He was pretty much the same Kobin she was friends with and that somehow was a relief.
"I know I wasn't considerate of you. I'm sorry if that upsets you." Jangmi said cautiously, "I'll make it up to you. See, I even got us a sweet little place to hang out."
"Yeah.." He sighed and looked down at his fingers. "I'm not asking you to make it up to me."
Jangmi gulped and looked down at her freezing fingers too. It was easy to feel misunderstood or used in a situation like Kobin's. Yujin had to leave for his hometown and Chaewon wasn't there, that must have left very few for him to spend time with. Not that she knew about Kobin's friend circles outside herself, but it still might have cut down on a lot of things. And as genuine as her reasons were, if she couldn't convey it to him, she had to naturally be the one to take the blame.
Kobin had tried to contact her once or twice to check up but the situations weren't very accommodating then and therefore she couldn't really get back to him. But the night before, Kobin called asking why she wasn't at her apartment and the gravity of things changed. She realised that to the world, she was as good as disappeared into thin air.
After some thought, she decided to meet Kobin at a small tea and ice-cream stall to assure him that things were alright. He seemed to have taken the offer but his demeanour had a tinge of sadness tagged to it.
"It's okay, you don't have to be so guilty. I'm your friend. I'm the only one that will accept your foolishness." He said after a short pause.
Jangmi smiled, "Thank you so much. I'll try to be more self-aware towards myself and my actions towards you too."
Kobin chuckled, "Yeah yeah. You don't have to be so formal with me you know? It's making me feel bad."
Jangmi smiled sadly, wishing she could pat him on the back to do something similar to make his sadness go away.
"How is your thing going on by the way?"
Her smile faded, "My thing?"
"Yes. The one with the fling with our chief guest."
