It was dark. I thought I couldn't see.
I thought I couldn't see until I saw a sliver of light coming through the door. There was screaming and begging and I immediately recognized the voices.
My mother. And Dimitri.
He was yelling. He was so angry and I loved to see him that way. I had taken his switch blade and carved "KILLER" onto the side of his car. The red paint had scraped off so easily. I think I was nine. Yeah, I had to have been because Nina was seven. This had to have been a few days after I found out dad died and Dimitri let it happen.
"Where is she?" he yelled ripping the house apart looking for me, "That brat! I'm going to beat her ass! How dare she!"
I had a hand over my mouth as I peeked from the inside of the closet. He stopped and looked my way. He had seen me and he was coming for me. I shut the door and cowered to the back behind the coats. The door rattled with such force until it finally popped off its hinges. He dug through the closet until he got ahold of my boney arm. I screamed as he yanked me out with such force I thought my arm would pop out of its socket.
"No!" my mother cried, "Get away from her!" She pulled his arm but he shoved her away.
"How dare you do that to my fucking Ferrari!" he said, his nasty breath getting to me, "Do you know how much that cost me?"
I kicked him in his shin. He wasn't fazed but it did push his buttons some more.
He hurled me across the room with the force you would use to hurl a man. I was sent head first to the coffee table. My temple cracked against the table and I fell to the side of it. Colors exploded in my vision and blood leaked from the wound in my head. I held my bloody temple and it didn't take me long to realize he had possibly fractured my eye socket. I could barely see in my right eye.
I took a look at my standings and figured I could make it to the stair and get to my room to hide in that closet. That door was way sturdier.
With what strength I still had in my small body I bolted to the stairs. I made it only half way up until Dimitri grabbed the back of my shirt and pulled me down. I felt my back crack against the hard wooden stairs and my shoulder dislodged itself. I rolled to my feet and once more ran from him. I ran down the hall and to the basement. I practically threw myself down the stairs to get into the dark.
He was still behind me though. I sharply turned and dropped to the floor and crawled. I managed to drag myself with my one good arm. There was this little door in the basement that I had managed to find a few weeks before and that's where I ran to. I pulled the small door and crawled inside. It was silently shut and I pulled my knees to my chest.
The blood blinded my vision in that one eye and I curled into a ball as the man ripped through the basement looking for me. He knew I was down there but he couldn't find me. I hid there. I didn't know for how long but I hid there. I heard mom crying and Lina, Dimitri's wife, was yelling at him. How could he beat a woman and child who wasn't even his? Well he didn't care because no one could protect because dad was dead. This man preyed in the weak.
It might have been a few days but Lina found me. The blood had already crusted over my eye and my shoulder was so numb it felt like it wasn't there anymore. She tended to my wound.
I had killed her husband. The father of her children.
And I didn't care. I'm glad I killed him.
I had then snapped out of my reminiscing and woke up to a sharp pain and explosion of more colors.
"Ouch," I groaned, "Jesus Christ."
I gripped tightly the back of my head and craned my neck. Sam stood next to my bed. He held his mouth. I shoved him away.
