Toby Grier; Vamper
"What should I do?" I beg my dad. "What do I do?"
"Come here, Tobster." Dad pulls me into a hug, stroking my hair with his fingers. "I know . . . It's difficult. You'll get through it, knowing what to do, just like always."
"Dad, I've never had human friends. I've never had any friend, besides you and Mom."
Sorrow crosses his handsome features. "That was the point, Tobsters." He says. No . . . Admits!
"You wanted me to have . . . human friends? That's why I was forced to go to their dummy school?"
Dad chuckles, the sound vibrating against my ear which is still pressed against his chest.
"Yes, I suppose. I wanted you to have some fun. You act so grown up all of the time, it's hard to picture you as a teenager." He kisses my forehead. "As I've told you, I had tons of human friends when I was a lad about your age. Of corse, that was about three hundred years ago. I was a human as a child. You've never gotten the chance to experience rebelliousness. Or anything, for that matter . . . it's guilty conscience, really . . ."
"Oh, Dad. I don't have only human friends, apparently. Ashley's a werewolf."
"Hey, you should've seen that one coming. Did you ever notice how sweet she smelled? It's because of her supernatural being. What's your other friend's name? Sammi?"
"Yes. But she can't be a supernatural being, she's too . . . human."
"You've never smelled a thing off about her?"
"Well of course, but you shan't expect me not to. I've not exactly been in close proximity with any humans. Ever."
"Trust your senses, Tobsters, trust your senses."
I take his reply as a closing, and so we go to hunt. The next day, Sammi and Ashley are talking in hushed, rushed voices.
When they see me entering, they stop their conversation abruptly, waving me over with fake smiles plastered to their faces. Uh-oh.
"Toby! How's it been, bitch?"
"Awesome . . . !"
At the hesitation in my voice, both girls share a worried glance.
"Bitch, about the other day, don't be freaked, okay?" Ashley starts. When I nod, she continues. "I didn't want to tell you, I don't want our friendship to be awkward or controlled by fear, you know? Don't . . . treat me any differently than before, okay? I'm not gonna eat you, I can promise that. Okay?"
"Okay." I nod once.
"Good! Let's go T. P. some houses!" She rubs her hands together.
"Yipee . . ."{Hey, y'all!
