Chapter 21

My eyes flew open and I clutched at my sword from the wall. The source of the scream came from just outside the alley. I must have slept for ages, and it was so dark that it could be midnight. My head whipped around and I could see Zoe standing up and drawing her sword too. At the entrance of the alley was a small beast that looked almost like a monkey. It had sharp fangs and matted fur that made it look like the monster had been in a swamp for hundreds of years. It shreiked again and bared its fangs. There was a blur of movement, and several more joined it. As one, they released a hideous scream and charged. "ZOE WATCH OUT!" I screamed. We slashed with our swords and the first couple of monsters exploded into dust. Zoe and I stood back to back and sliced and cut at the beasts, but more kept attacking us as soon as we killed some. I held my sword in one hand and grabbed a small knife from its sheath and threw it into the belly of the nearest demon. "Zoe! Do you think you could get over onto the roof of that apartment?" I yelled over the commotion. "Maybe if you give me a boost!" she yelled back. "Okay on the count of three! ONE, TWO, THREE!" I yelled as I formed a step with my hands. Zoe placed one foot on my hands and leaped. She gripped the edge of the wall and hefted herself up and over onto the roof. I felt a sharp pain all over my body. The demon monsters had realized that I had put my sword away and were biting and cutting me with their teeth and claws. "ZOE HELP!" I screamed in pain. I felt hands grip my arms and I was pulled out of reach of the monsters.
