Charlie POV

"Babe, wake up." I nudge Nick's shoulder, smiling when he mumbles something before opening his eyes and looking at me.

"Where are we?"

"Glasgow. I need a break from driving."

"Oh. Sorry, I guess I haven't been the best road trip buddy." He rubs at his eyes and looks around at our surrounds.

"That's okay. I know you're tired." I move to get out of the car but Nick grabs my hand from the steering wheel and brings it up to his lips, kissing over my wedding band.

"Best husband in the world." He mutters and I smile.

"I think you take the crown for that one, babe." He rolls his eyes and changes the subject.

"Can you believe that this time last year we were almost getting married?"

"Mm. Feels like yesterday." Our anniversary is on Sunday so we decided to have a little getaway to Scotland for the weekend to celebrate. "I'm still not used to people calling me Mr Nelson, though."

He laughs and lets go of my hand so we can both get out of the car and stretch. "After you, Mr Nelson." He teases, gesturing to the path ahead of us.

"Dork." I roll my eyes but move anyway, grabbing his hand as I pass so that he walks beside me.

We walk the streets of Glasgow for about an hour, just enjoying the time exploring together. After a quick lunch, we get back into the car, Nick taking the driver's seat this time for the second half of our trip.

Once we hit the freeway again, Nick reaches a hand over to rest on my knee, squeezing occasionally. I smile at him and relax into the seat. We talk about anything and everything, watching the sun go down around us.

It's dark by the time Nick brings the car to a stop, but there's light streaming from the windows of the BnB we are staying in. It looks like a castle, looming up out of the dark.

"Seems so romantic." I say as we get out of the car.

"Well, it is our anniversary weekend. It kind of has to be." Nick wraps an arm around my waist and presses a kiss to my temple. "Love you."

"Love you too." I smile as he leads me up to the front entrance.

"Good evening, welcome to the Loch Ness Lodge, how can I help you?" The clerk behind the desk speaks up.

"We have a reservation for the weekend. Under Nelson." Nick says, hand moving from my waist to take my hand.

"Of course. Your room is ready. Here are your key cards." The clerk types something in the computer before handing over the cards.

"Thank you." Nick takes them and we turn to go back outside to get our bags.

"Please, let us know if there's anything you need."

"We will, thank you." I send a smile over my shoulder.

A few minutes later, Nick drops the suitcase to the floor outside our room, unlocking the door. I move to step inside but he stops me, pulling me up into his arms bridal style.

"Nick!" I laugh, holding on tight as he carries me to the bed and unceremoniously dumps me onto it. "You idiot."

"What? Isn't this what I'm supposed to do?" He quickly brings the suitcase inside and lets the door swing shut before joining me on the bed, crawling over me and pressing our lips together.

"It is, but I think you're a bit late. It's supposed to be the first time we enter our home together." My hands are in his hair, combing through gently as I gaze up at him.

"Hm, if I remember correctly, I did carry you into our flat when we moved in."

"Yes, but that wasn't exactly romantic. You just wanted to get into my pants." I tease and he smirks, one hand sliding down over my ribs.

"And who says I'm not just trying to get into your pants now?"

"Me. Because I'm tired from today. I don't think I have the energy for that right now." I half expect him to protest but he nods and rolls off me.

"Me too. And I had a nap in the car. Ugh, why is adult life so tiring?" He rests his head on my chest and curls into my side. I wrap my arms around him

"I don't know. But it's fun too. Because being an adult means I get to be married to the best man in the whole world."

"Mm. I love you, Charlie." He lifts his head just enough to press his lips to my jaw.

"I love you too."

**********

We spend Saturday exploring the town, having a picnic lunch by the water and me trying to convince Nick that there really is a monster somewhere in Loch Ness. In the evening we holed up in our room and had some of the most mind blowing sex we've had in ages.

On Sunday Nick wakes up first, waking me by scattering kisses across my face.

"Hm, good morning." I whisper, keeping my eyes closed as he kisses me properly.

"Good morning, Charlie Nelson." Hearing him say my name, in that husky voice, sends shivers down my spine.

"Happy anniversary."

"A whole year being married to you. Best year of my life." He props himself up on one elbow to look at me and I smile.

"Best year ever." I agree.

"I've got something for you."

"Hm, I can already feel it..." I say, reaching to cup his half hard dick with a smirk.

"Not yet, baby." He pushes my hand away, and I let out a whine as he gets off the bed and goes over to the suitcase. I watch as he digs through, eventually pulling out a carefully wrapped gift.

"What's that?"

"For you." I sit up in bed as he climbs back on, kneeling beside me. "Someone told me that it's traditional to give paper as a gift on the first anniversary."

"Aw, babe." I lean in to peck his lips. "You're so cute sometimes." A blush spreads over his cheeks as he hands me the gift.

"I just wanted you to know how much I love you." He watches as I rip open the paper and see what he's bought.

It's a framed shadow box with our wedding vows as the backing of two origami people made to look like us on our wedding day. Tears spring to my eyes as I take in the thoughtful gift and I gently out it aside to throw my arms around my husband.

"I love it. Thank you so much, Nicky."

"You're welcome, Charlie."

"I have something for you too, but I couldn't bring it along this weekend. It wouldn't fit in the suitcase."

"That's okay." I press my hands to his face and look at him.

"Do you want to know what I got you or wait until we get home?"

"That's up to you. I can wait if you want me to." I bit my lip for a second, considering, and then pull away to grab my phone, scrolling through to find the email confirmation.

"Here. I got you this. It's perfect, now we can hang it beside your present." I show him my phone and he gasps.

"Charlie, this is beautiful."

I'd also gone along with the paper theme, finding a company that could make a print with an image of the stars from the night of our wedding, as they would have been right over where we got married. Our names and wedding date are printed underneath with the words 'You're my guiding light' in both French and English.

"I still can't believe we're actually married and have been for a year now." I say, leaning into his arms when he holds them open.

"Believe it, baby, because it's true and it will be true for the rest of your life."
