Charlie

Daniela hugs me from behind, pressing her lips to my bare back. Her hands runs up my chest and rest over my beating heart.

"I love you." She mumbles against my skin, and I slowly turn around, wrapping my arms around her waist. Daniela stands on her tiptoes and pecks my lips, pressing her palm against my cheeks. "I still can't believe we're married."

I chuckle, squeezing the skin around her hip. "You better start believing it. Okay, Daniela Halford?" I ask her, skimming my nose across her own.

Daniela groans, closing her eyes. "I need to get used to that, as well." She smiles. "I'm gonna miss my maiden name. Wilson." She runs her hand through her dark, wavy hair.

"If you want, if we have a baby boy, we can name him Wilson. Wilson Halford. It has a ring to it, don't you think?"

Just as she's about to reply, my phone rings from where it sits on my counter. I glance at it, seeing that it's Laura. I frown. Laura never calls me. She always texts.

Daniela slowly moved back and I pick my phone up, answering it. "Laura? Is everything okay?" I ask her. I hear a sniff on the other end of the call.

"Ch-charlie." She says, and I can already tell she's been crying. A lot. Something is very, very wrong.

"Laura, what' wrong? Tell me." I say, the desperation clear in my voice.

"It's er... It's Jacob." She says, and my breathing stops. "He... He overdosed and..." Her crying increases, the sound stabbing me right in the heart. Daniela stands opposite me, a worried look in her face. "Charlie, Jacob died."

And, there it was. The words that broke me. The words that finally tore open my heart and ripped out all the goodness. A pain so unfathomable, words can't describe it. An anguish so gut-wrenching, that it can drop you to your knees.

"W... What?" I ask her. I can't have heard her right. He's not dead. Jacob isn't dead. There's no way. "What did you say?" I can already feel the tears threatening to slip out of my eyes.

"He's dead, Charlie. He just died... And... I don't know what to do... He's gone." She cries, and I find myself crying with her.

"Charlie." I hear Daniela say, but I'm numb. "Charlie, what's going on? What's wrong?"

The phone slowly slips out of my hand and smashes onto the tiled floor. Daniela's hands are on my cheeks and she's forcing me to look at her.

"Charlie. Hey." She says, but I don't want to hear her. I don't want anything more than this all to be some sick prank. Please. Be a joke, please. "Charlie, please." Daniela pleads, tears filling up her eyes.

"Jacob-" I try to speak, but I can't. I can't speak. I can't. "He's..." My legs are weak. They refuse to hold up my weight.

The next thing I know, I'm collapsing into Daniela's arms. "Charlie!" She screams, fear evident in her tone.

My eyes close. I'm numb. Jacob's dead. He's gone. And he might as well have taken me with him.

Aah, damn.

Just thought I'd add this to tie everything up and show how Charlie reacted to his best friend's death. Very sad.

I wonder if he ever tells Daniela what happened 🤔🤔

Anyways, I'll leave it up to your imaginations to decide where this leaves his future with Daniela.

See ya later, folks. This book was a journey and a half.

Meet me at the Author's note. Cheerio.
