It's been hours since Jacob left the house. I pace the length of the landing, my phone pressed to my ear as I waited for him to answer.

He didn't. It constantly goes to voicemail, I hear his voice in my ear and it calms for a few swings before reality hits than he's still not home.

Fuck.

Fuck. Where was he? What was he doing? Did he find someone to sell him some drugs, and did he take them?

Is he safe? Fuck, I hope he's safe. I needed him to come back to me. I needed him to walk through those doors and tell me that's he's sorry and that everything's okay. That he's not well, but we'll get through it together because we love each other. I desperately needed him to come home and tell me all this.

To bide my time, I ended up cleaning the whole house, scrubbing at every surface I could get my hands on and cleaning literally anything that needed to be cleaned. I ordered some food for when Jacob came back home and lined up a movie for the two of us to watch.

Hours had passed by the time I was finished, and there was still no sign of him.

I could feel tears spring into my eyes, but I hadn't lost hope yet. He's coming home. Jacob said he'd come home, and I'm choosing to believe him.

I sit on the couch, my heart hammering inside my chest when my phone rings.

Oh, thank God.

I grab my phone, only for my relief to fall away when I see Laura's name across the screen. She was visiting her parents this weekend, I believe.

I answered the phone. "Hey, Laura." I sighed.

"Aria?" Laura's voice cracks, and my heart completely drops. "Hello?"

"Laura, what's wrong? Why are you crying?" I'm instantly on my feet, my chest aching. Something was wrong. Something was deeply, deeply wrong.

"Aria- it's Jacob." She sobs, and my heart falls.

"What?" I whisper. "What about him, Laura?"

"He..." She chokes on a sob. "Oh, God. He- he overdosed, Aria."

"
