There was stunning silence in the great hall as Adelaide walked into it. Many were in awe of her, the beautiful hair, stunningly cold eyes, and the spine of a diamond. All but one. Sirius Orion Black twisted his face in furious disgust and snarled "You?".
The heiress's face held the loathing of a thousand Walburgas as she hissed.
"You?"
Oh, dear. "Adelaide, why don't you take a seat and I'll bring you up to date as to why you are here."
The forever cool voice of regulus black cut through the bleary tension like a steak knife. Out of respect for the younger black, Adelaide whirled away and took a seat next to him.
There was the problem you see, Sirius Black, was in love with Marlene Mckinnon.
The blonde stared at the french heiress her heart twisting with jealousy strong enough to burn. She loved Sirius with everything she had, perhaps he might have not loved her as strongly but the certainly was something. That meant that the existence of Carina Black was a mistake, an error in her boyfriend's life, or, Sirius would leave Marlene for this, cold, high-born lass.
Both possibilities made her sick to the stomach.
Sirius caught her worried face and covered her hand with his own. His thoughts mirrored Marlene's. Lilly caught her friend's eye and gave her a reassuring smile, hoping things would work out in the end.
On the other end of the hall, by the Slytherin's table sat Adelaide, and though she was being subjected to the scrutiny of Walburga Black, the young heiress seemed perfectly at ease.
Clearing his throat to garner attention, Dumbledore lifts a tape into the air, "Now that our new guest has settled, let us move on with the films."
Narcissa Malfoy knew that to expect her niece to have perfect decorum was to ask for too much. And though Carina Black hadn't acted out of the ordinary throughout the course of the ball, it didn't mean that she could relax. After all, Carina had the genes of the three most volatile Black Cousins, it would do her no good.
"Your lack of faith in us wounds me Narcissa"
"It is with good reason Sirius"
Her thoughts were proved true when the eleven-year-old very ungraciously interrupted her conversation with the Minister of Defense to ask for her time.
Narcissa sent a pointed look toward Sirius who hung his head in acceptance. "Told you so."
Bella chuckled. "People don't place bets against Cissy within reason"
"Andromeda don't say that!" Whisper shouted at Narcissa whose cheeks had flushed pink. The black cousins, both shunned and supremacists chuckled at their Cissy.
"What is it, Carina?" she asked, praying patience, but one look at the girl told her something was wrong. "Come," said her niece as she led her into the kitchen and right into a pool of blood.
"Oh lord"
Emma Black had never been ungrateful in her life, she never had any reason to complain. All was well with her husband and two children. But she wanted more. One child was simply not enough. And as much as she loved carina like her own, she wasn't. It was clear in her manners and her actions. It was clear in the way she walked and the way she thought. More than that, Emma simply wanted another child. She yearned for a bigger family.
"I have a bad feeling as to where this is going..."
She was about to too. Regulus and she were excited about the new baby (perhaps it would have been a boy.). They had wanted to wait until Christmas dinner to tell the girls. So that the two of them would come to know at the same time. But of course, the baby didn't take, they never did for purebloods. Celeste was a miracle child. Some blessing. But that was it. Emma Black felt stupid as she sat in the toilet and cried for a child she would never get to hold.
"Poor Emma."
It was when a knock sounded. "Em, it's me, Narcissa. I saw the blood darling, do you want to open the door so we can talk about it?" regardless of what others said, Narcissa Malfoy was an angel in disguise. She had guided her and helped her throughout her pregnancy and took half the responsibility in raising both Carina and Cass, never complaining once.
Adelaide shook her head softly and smiled in thanks to Narcissa who in turn, smiled back. Sirius' heart ached.
Softly, Emma unlatched the door to reveal a concerned-looking Narcissa. The Malfoy moved forward to come to sit next to the black on the cool bathroom tiles. Emma shook softly under the pain and the weight of her tears.
"Before I got pregnant with Draco, maybe a year into my marriage, I was with child. We were both so happy, so in love and so hopeful. I was young and wished to have many children as I possibly could. I wanted to have a loud home, filled with children. Just like you do, but I didn't know, I was naive, I knew lesser than you. The first time was at a family dinner."
Andromeda flinches, remembering exactly what had happened and Bellatriix's face turns to stone.
" At the beginning, I didn't know what to do, there was this sort of...pressure that kept growing. I excused myself and sat in the toilet, watching myself bleed and crying because I didn't know what to do. Because I was losing my first baby and it hurt so much both physically and mentally."
Narcissa pauses, laughs hollowly, takes a deep breath, and continues, "Lucius wasn't there at that time, he was working late into the late those days. So Bella found me, Bleeding and crying. She fetched Andy and the three of us simply sat there, I was crying onto Andy, hoping the pain would pass. Bella simply sat next to the two of us, holding my hand."
"And then?"
Narcissa laughed, yet again, this time more hollow. "Walburga had come searching for us. We were taking too long. She saw me on the floor, pathetic as can be, she saw Andy holding onto me and she saw Bella getting up as though she was going to hex her if she had anything unkind to say."
"Did she say anything unkind to you?"
"No, she gave me practical advice. She told me that this was a pain that mothers of our world had to bear. She told me that there will come a time when I will have a child. And when I have that child there will be nothing in the world that I will love more than that child."
Narcissa smiled at Emma, "She couldn't have been more right"
The people in the great hall murmured and shifted at the prospect that the Walburga Black was depicted as something even remotely close to nice. Meanwhile, Sirius simply sat still, staring dead ahead at the screen, and wishing that his mother had shown her love a little more.
Emma slowly nods and looks down at her feet, "I would like to go home."
"Go, Carina and Cass can stay here, send celeste too if you would like, you need some time with Reggie, I'll send him after you as soon as I can.
Adelaide is the first to speak, "Monsuier Dumbledore, why don't we take a short five-minute break. Sirius rolls his eyes "yes, god forbid Marquis, your slow brain would take too long to catch up."
"I was speaking in consideration for the people who would want to take a break after the painful information they have learnt of, but if you insist on being so insensitive to the idea of taking a break then maybe you should take classes on 'how to be emotionally available 101'"
"A break would be wonderful. Thank you Miss Marquis", said Mrs Potter as she stood.

Sigh, this is going to take a while...
