Good looks ran in the Black family blood. There was no mistaking that for certain. But the level of beauty the two children on the screen possessed at the moment was beyond even the proud pureblood family.
"Kill me now please they make me feel ugly."
"And all of this at 11 years old."
The Purebloods on the other hand remained silent, unaffected even. For the two girls wore nothing out of the ordinary. Both wore respective colors of black and green. Simple adornments and simple jewels. Nothing too flashy and yet, there was something about them that drew attention.
"Of course, they wouldn't know", thought Walburga.
The secret wasn't in the Black family's good looks, no. Instead, it lay in the way the children were brought up. Children, from a very young age, were expected to portray themselves with confidence. They were taught to walk in a way that demanded respect and power.
It was a principle that all Sacred Twenty-Eight members knew. Just that only the Pureblood supremacists kept up the choices and lessons of various behaviors.
"Are you excited Cass? Things like these come in once a year", Says Carina, casually throwing an arm around her second cousin.
"Twice a year, you missed the ball held on New Year.", Corrects Cass as she fusses with her sleeves.
"Alright so what if it's once or twice, let's go!" finally losing patience, Carina grabs the edge of the sleeve that Cass had worked so hard to straighten and tugged, pulling the frayed girl along with her.
Every year, one of the most prestigious families of The Sacred Twenty-Eight would throw the Christmas and new year's balls. It was something meant for families to mingle, an opportune moment for social climbers to up their game, and for the big families to strengthen their alliances.
"Sounds serious."
"We all know that is everything unlike me, Marlene!"
This year, it was the Malfoy family that was hosting the ball.
The Malfoys sat up a little straighter, hoping their counterparts didn't disappoint.
"Theo!"
The two girls stared in shock.
"Why?"
"What are you doing?" Theo smiles sheepishly and diverts his attention to the mirror, making sure everything was in place.
It barely took Cass a moment before she burst out laughing, Carina following her footsteps a few seconds later.
For there stood, in all his royal treachery....the prince of lies and the crown of mischief...Theodore Nott in a proper vest.
"Why is it such a big deal?"
"Because it's you! Silly!"
"It looks like Theo is getting thorough eh?" comments Carina, nudging Cass, wiggling her eyebrows at a slowly turning red face Theo.
"Shut it will you? We're already late, let's go."
"The crown of mischief?"
"We should call ourselves the crowns of mischief, right prongs?"
"Certainly Padfoot, what do you say moony?"
"I say shut it and face the screen."
"Buzzkill"
So the three headed out into the ballroom, one excited, one bored, and another, thoroughly embarrassed.
"Sounds like a party"
As always...the Malfoys had outdone themselves. Silk curtains hung over the enormous windows and the ballroom was decorated in green-a standard color. Wine flowed, unlimited and free. Food was served, sweet, rich, and creamy. No one had anything to object to.
Carina stared at the various people chatting, laughing, and dancing. They were all having fun. Cass on one end was deeply involved in a conversation with the Malfoys and some irrelevant minister. Theo and Zabini stood in a corner, sulking and Draco was to be seen strutting around with Crabbe and Goyle at his heels. Smiling slightly, carina shook her head and briskly started towards Blaise and Theo to sulk with them.
'Maman t'aime mon amour'
The whisper came to Carina from within. Pain lashed through her forehead and her knees buckled, giving away beneath her, and for one scary moment, it seemed as though poor, nervous, stuttering mister Quirrell stood at the entrance of the hall. But the moment had been so quick that it almost looked as though she had imagined it.
"What the-"
An uneasy murmur shuddered through the great hall. The scene was so vivid that it gave many people goosebumps. Sirius was worried, it was quite evident from the obvious frown on his face.
"Love, are you alright?" the concerned face of Emma Black hovered over the withdrawn frame of Carina's.
"Yes, aunt, quite a bit of a headache that's all. I'll be fine in a bit I'm sure.", assured Carina. Giving her niece one last look, Emma vanished into the kitchens. Deciding to ignore the bout of pain, Carina walked towards Theo and Blaise.
"Where have you been?"
"I stole some muffins, want some?"
Both boys grabbed a muffin each. The three munched in silence, watching Cass entertain one guest after another.
"She reminds me of a young Narcissa."
"Oh, the irony."
"How much longer Blaise?" groaned Theo, sighing loudly. Blaise Zabini, proper as ever, checked his watch and said, "One more hour to midnight."
Carina let out a tired sigh as Theo straightened and rubbed his eyes.
Many of the second-year purebloods felt pity, for the children, they knew how much of a drag the Balls were.
One hour to midnight.....
Carina got up abruptly. "Perhaps I shall go back home to keep dear Celeste some company."
Theo and Blaise sigh longingly at this. "Tell Celeste I said hello", muttered Blaise moodily.
"Oh to have siblings", sighed Marlene. Lily and Sirius flinch away at that. Sometimes, even the closest sibling gets driven apart.
Carina stretched her legs and walked briskly toward the kitchen where her aunt had disappeared only a few minutes ago. "Auntie, I'm flooing back home-"
"Auntie?"
But all that was left of Emma Black, was a pool of blood.
"WHAT THE F-", the Great Hall rose in an uproar as the staff made futile attempts to calm them down. The purebloods, though they wore their masks of calm looked anxiously at the screen. Suddenly, at the center of the Great Hall, a flame burst out and a piece of paper drifted toward Sirius. "Someone new will join the fray of the soon-to-be adults in the room. Let us give a warm welcome to Adelaide Marquis of Beauxbaton and mother to Carina Amelie Black.", he read out uncertainly.
The doors of the great hall flung open as a girl of seventeen walked. From her gait and her clothing, it was quite obvious of her noble heritage and generous income. It was quite hard for anyone to belive that she and Sirius would actually make a pair.
"Merlins Balls..."
