Murmurs and whispers scattered themselves around the great hall, there wasn't much going on now. Mrs Black had recovered remarkably fast and chose to spend her time lavishing her attention and love on the children who were present almost always in the house. Theodore Nott Jr, Blaise Zabini, Draco Malfoy, Carina Black, Cassiopeia Lestrange, and their little Celeste Black. They cooked in the kitchens, much to kreature's horror, and ran in the snow until their cheeks were pink, when the sun sunk beneath the clouds, they huddled next to each other near the fireplace and did their own thing. The students who watched this felt warm. Memories like these were precious.

Sirius Black paced the length of the hall, wanting desperately for a smoke, but knowing well enough that nobody from his family would approve. "you look like you've got a fire lit up you arse Black.", came the soft chuckle from a certain Marquis.

Edgily, Sirius eyed her, she stood near the balcony, lit cigarette in hand, the moonlight cast a glow over her head, creating a halo. She looked ethereal.

And cold, and inhumane. Walburga loved her. Therefore, Sirius despised her. It was simple really. "Maybe it's your presence Marquis", suggested he. The lady laughed, "It seems my charm hasn't worn away through the years has it?"

It infuriated him, he was about to respond when a hand slipped into his own. Marlene. "Marquis", she said.

Adelaide did not bother replying as she levelled her with her stare, blowing out smoke steadily. Marlene scrunched her nose a little but did not cough or step back. Sirius straightened, feeling uncomfortable.  Adelaide smiled a cold smile. Sirius hated it. It often reminded her of Walburga. He felt Marlene stiffen beside her. Holding her hand tighter, Sirius cleared his throat. "We'll be off Marquis. Thanks for nothing."

"You'll be off Black, me and McKinnon have matters to discuss ." she hadn't taken her eyes off of Marlene since she'd arrived. Sirius felt strangely possessive of Marelene. Such Slytherin folks would ruin her to bits, nobody close to his blood family was allowed to consort with his loved ones. Marlene must have felt him stiffen, she reached on her tiptoes to give him a quick peck on his cheek, begone Sririus, she smiled teasingly. Sirius had no choice now, she gave one last baleful glare towards Adelaide but she wasn't even looking at him. Tired of being ignored, Sirius walked away.

James and Lily had their arms wrapped around each other, seemingly involved in some lover discussion, he had no place there. Remus had his head burrowed in his hands, the full moon was less than 2 weeks away, so it was best that he was left alone. Peter was nowhere to be seen, which left Sirius with no one to talk to. Pouting, he sat on the edge of the bench.

As if his daughter being put in Slytherin wasn't bad enough...

"I refuse to be intimidated by Adelaide Marquis", the words played through Marlene's head, as though a record were broken and placed on a loop. But who was she trying to fool? Marlene McKinnon had never been as nervous as she was at the moment. The pureblood's eyes seemed devoid of any suspecting fragility or warmth. No, these eyes, were polished steel. Almost sterling, and they betrayed nothing. Adelaide sprawled leisurely against the balcony, her mouth twisted upwards, nearly cruel in jest.

"So, Marlene McKinnon", her voice poured over Marlene, melting honey, yet she had never felt so cold inside. "That's me!", albeit, her voice wasn't as strong as she would've liked to be, but it was stronger than what she was capable of at the moment.

"You're in love with him, aren't you? Yes, you are. You don't need to answer that. Your afraid I will steal him back to our snotty, merciless, manic family arent you?" Adelaide's laugh was like the rest of her, sharp and cruel as she threw her head back in bitter mirth. Marlene felt whatever was left of her voice disintegrate. These...people, they certainly were mad.

"Fret not, the future has warned us, I refuse to make a mistake that has already been pointed.", her mouth curled even more viciously into a snarl. "To even think that I would sully myself by laying a hand on the blood traitor-"

"That's enough.", Marlene herself was stunned at how strong her voice had come out, softening herself a tad bit, she continued, rage frothing in her, ready to overflow. "I have nothing against you, truly. We have never met, and by your evident feelings, you and Sirius don't share any love for each other either. I understand your hatred for him runs deep, however, I will not tolerate you badmouthing the boy I love." Marlene suddenly couldn't stand to be anywhere near the heiress. How could she treat the future in a manner so blase? How could she call her own child a mistake?

Head reeling, and unwilling to receive any response, Marlene strode away from Adelaide, with a frown towards were Sirius sat, shoulders drooping and head held low.
