The next day, Pierre was taken out of the room with a blindfold over his eyes. He stumbled as the same goon from yesterday handled him roughly, pushing and pulling him around the place until he heard the door of the room close with a creak. His mother had been asleep when they came to take him, so they didn't give him a chance to say goodbye for now.

The goon moved him some more before stopping him in place. A couple of locks clicking and a door opening later, he then pulled Pierre forward and pushed him down by his shoulders, making him sit on a surprisingly comfortable couch.

"Have you decided on your fate, Mr. Collins?"

Someone pulled his blindfold away, and Pierre gasped. Claudius was sitting just a few feet across from him, staring at him in amusement.

Pierre breathed a sigh. "Yes. I. . . I'll do what you want."

"Excellent." Claudius grinned. "Now to start-"

"But you have to do something for me first."

Claudius tilted his head. "You're not exactly in a position to negotiate."

"I-I'm not asking for anything big," Pierre said quickly. "I just want you to promise me that you won't let my mom get hurt and that she. . . she won't know that I'm doing this for real."

"Ah," Claudius said. "So you want me to help you lie to the mother who birthed you?"

Pierre gulped. "Y-Yes."

"Well, you're in luck." The man laughed haughtily. "I'm quite good at deception if I do say so myself. Fine, I'll honor your end of the bargain only if you honor mine. That means doing as I order without any hesitation. Is that clear?"

Pierre gave him the slightest nod. I guess I'm really going to do this.

"Good boy," Claudius said. "I'll have you trained by the Cardinals soon, but for now, I'll hand you over to Arsenyev to. . . well, show you the ropes."

"Train?" Pierre echoed. "What do you mean 'train'?"

"If you're going to have some use to me, you'll have to master your powers," Claudius explained, his tone bored. "I don't want you to become volatile when the time comes. Leonidas and Hendryx are supposed to start you today but they just left for an important agenda. Any more questions?"

"Yeah, actually," Pierre said. "Who are Leonidas and-"

Claudius snapped his fingers. "Take him to the witch. She'll answer every question you have just fine."

"What? Wai-Whoa!"

The goon from earlier pulled him up from the couch, grabbing him by his arms that were still tied up. As Pierre struggled to keep his balance, the blindfold slid back over his head and covered his eyes before he could see where he was. He was dragged around for a while, his breath panting, until he was suddenly pushed forward and a door slammed shut behind his back. He winced at the loud noise.
