I actually really love this phrase and where I live it seems to be used quite a bit :)
If someone has lost the plot it basically means that they have gone crazy/ acting in a really silly ridiculous way. Also if someone 'loses the plot' it could also mean something has caused them to become angry. For example, 'When my girlfriend saw the mess I had made, she lost the plot.'
