Reading Harry Potter

Chapter 5

Lily continued on to the next letter.

Dear Professor Dumbledore,
I am pleased to say that I have found Mr Potter and will soon be taking him to Diagon Alley. I was very surprised though that had no idea that he was a wizard and had been told his parents had died in a car crash. I had not realised that this would be an issue and so was a bit shocked to have to explain all about Hogwarts and Magic in general. It was deeply upsetting to have to explain his parents death and how he got his scar. As I'm sure you probably already knew it was Harry's birthday and so we had cake despite it being a bit squished. We're leaving soon and I can't wait to get as far as possible away from the Dursleys and I wish we could take Harry too.

From Hagrid

"I can't believe they never told him! Well actually unfortunately I can believe it! How horrible could they have been, he must have been so confused when he started doing accidental magic and they would have just convinced him he was strange and blame him despite knowing there was nothing he could do about it!" Ranted Lily after finishing. Everyone seemed shocked by what they had heard and so nobody could answer her.
"You don't think they would have hurt him would they? I swear to merlin I will hurt them so much if they ever lay a hand on my son!" Cried James looking heartbroken at the thought.
"Let's just read the next one and he should be at hogwarts soon and so he will be safe at least," said Marlene taking the next letter and starting to read it out.

"Dear mum,
I'm in Gryffindor!! I was a bit worried about that but I'm so glad that I'm not in Slytherin. Fred and George would have been horrid if I had. I'm in a dorm with three other boys, Neville, Seamus, Dean, and Harry. Harry Potter! Remember him from the train station? He actually sat next to me on the train and gave me some sweets! He seems a bit shy but I hope we can be friends! Everybody kept staring at him and I don't think he likes it, but I don't want to just be friends with him because of his scar, he seems really nice on his own.
Classes start on Monday and I'm not sure if I'm looking forward to them. Professor Snape seems just as bad as Charlie said and I don't think I'll be as good at potions as he was. I'll write another letter next week, as there's not really much to write about now.

"He seems so sweet! It's nice to know that Harry is making friends!" Said Lily smiling.

"Molly has a little boy called Ron, do you think that's him?" Asked Fabian.

"Probably as he talked about Fred and George and Charlie too," replied Gideon, smiling at the thought of his nephews all grown up.

"There's another letter that's from Ron to his mum again, I'll just read that one now too," said Marlene and began her reading once again.

Dear mum,

My first week at Hogwarts has been great fun! Classes aren't all that interesting yet as we are just doing the basic but I don't know if I'm doing very well or not even with that, I hope I start to get better at spells soon. Harry and I are actually properly friends now I think which is great as he's one of my first friends. The other boys in my dorm are really nice too, Neville lives with his gran as he says his parents are in St. Mungo's, Seamus is a half-blood and Dean is a muggle born so we're all from different backgrounds. Some of the things Dean talks about I don't really understand and he's not all that sure about magic things along with Harry. Harry doesn't talk much about his home so I'm not sure what his Aunt and Uncle are like.
Professor McGonagal is head of house and transfiguration teacher and she's very strict but I think secretly she's nice! Fred and George already got into trouble but don't worry I won't be doing anything like them.
Professor Snape is scary just like everyone said, he hates gryffindors and especially seems to hate Harry which neither of as know why. Everything else has been fine apart from that class when he asked Harry questions which definitely weren't first year level.
The rest of the week nothing much happened but I will send another letter next week.

"Professor Snape? As in Snivellius?" Asked Sirius looking half appalled and half like he was trying not to laugh.

"That's mental, why would he be hired to work at Hogwarts?" Continued James.

"Well he was extremely good at potions so it makes sense! What I'm more worried about is why he seems to hate my son! It must be your fault, he's holding a grudge against my son because of you guys!" Said Lily angrily glaring at James, Sirius and Remus.

"Lils, calm down okay, there's not much to do now is there? I'm sure Professor Dumbledore or one of the other teachers would step in if it got out of control, so don't stress about it" said Alice trying to smooth her friend.

"But what about what was said about Neville's parents! Neville is your son what on earth are you doing in St Mungo's? That's really doesn't sound good!" Said Dorcus, looking at Alice in shock.

"I don't know lets just read on and maybe we will find out" said Frank, trying to stay strong but looking worryingly at his wife.
