"Abraham, get down here." Abigail yells up to the seventeen year old boy.
"I'm coming, mom!" I hear the young boy reply.
"I'm sorry, Elizabeth, I thought he'd be ready by now." Abigail says, turning to me.
I wave my hand and say, "It's alright. I'm a little early, anyhow." She motions for me to sit down. "May I ask, where is Henry?"
Abigail takes a breath and sits beside me, "Henry is out at work at the grave diggers."
I nod and before I can respond Abraham walks down the stairs, "Elizabeth, you look well." He complements as he walks up to his mother and I, holding his hand out for me to take. I smile and stand up, taking his outstretched hand.
"Thank you, Abe. You look well, too." He smiles and kisses my head.
"Be careful, you two. No one knows what could happen. I do hope Henry will be back when you both get home." Abigail says, dabbing her eyes. I frown at the thought that I have upset her.
"We will, mom. I love you." Abe says, as he kisses her cheek and we walk out the door.
"I love you, too, mom." I place my hand in Abe's arm. "I've got the whole day planned out. A nice picnic near the river, then a stroll through the park, and finally ice cream on our way back home."
I smile, "Very thoughtful, Abe. Thank you." As we get to the river, I find a blanket and a nice lunch laid out. "Abe, this is so wonderful."
"Wait till you taste it." He replies, motioning for me to sit down on the blanket. I do and he sits beside me. He hands me a plate with, what I'm assuming to be, Abigail's fried chicken, potatoe salad, watermelon, and a roll. Abe confirms my
suspicions, "It's mom's cooking, I set it up beforehand and I had a friend of mine watch it."
"Well, I'm going to have to thank Abigail." I say, nodding my thanks to him.
After eating, we watch people and talk about everything and nothing at the same time. "I received my draft letter the other day." He says, searching my face for any sign of emotion.
"What does Henry and Abigail think?" I ask, crossing my arms.
Abe looks down and frowns, "Dad isn't happy. Mom isn't thrilled, either. I leave in two weeks."
I cover my mouth, "Abe, why didn't you tell me?" I ask, pushing my hair back.
"I didn't want you to be worried. I didn't want this reaction." He wraps his arm around me and pulls me into a hug. I place my head on his shoulder and close my eyes.
"I'm proud of you, Abe." I comment, wrapping my arms around him. He lays back and takes me with him. "I'm going to end up falling asleep, you know."
"It'll be okay." He says, yawning.
~~~ The Next Morning ~~~
"Wake up, you two." I hear someone say, blocking the sunlight from our eyes.
I partially open my eyes and sit up, "Officer... Good morning." I say, slightly shaking Abraham. "I am so sorry about that. I'm not sure what happened."
"Just don't let it happen again, okay?" He asks as he walks away.
"I think we should get back," Abe says sitting up. I nod, agreeing. As we get back to the Morgan's apartment, Henry opens the door, "Morning Dad."
"Hello, Henry." I say, folding my hands together.
"Where were you two? We have been worried sick!" He exclaims, ushering us in.
"We fell asleep in the park. I'm sorry, dad." Abe says, as Henry frowns at us.
Abigail walks in to the room, upon seeing us she runs to Abe and hugs him, "Oh, Abraham, I was so worried!"
"I'm sorry, it was kind of my fault. We laid down and was watching people and kind of fell asleep." I say, crossing my arms.
"We're just glad your safe." Abigail says wrapping me into their hug as well.
