CHAPTER TWO

Our mission was hard and brutal, as you would have expected. We had to cross a jungle (just in case we got caught by road) and many people died by that. Paul was always nice to me and welcomed me, in fact, I think he loved me. Sadly, he was bitten by a wild snake. I'm still not sure what type it was, but Paul was all red, and then he died in seconds. It was sad, but hunters don't cry. I could see everyone wanted to cry. I don't blame them, Paul was a nice guy.

Bruno had a funny name and I actually laughed at him once. He took it as a joke, or so he says, but I could tell he hated me. His arrows and clubs barely miss me when he is behind me in war. I'm not saying I was happy when he died, but you know what I mean. He was attacked by a lion, which killed a girl whose name I can't remember also. As soon as the lion's claws touched his neck, he had no hope. The lion jumped on the girl and she died too, but then I managed to shoot at the lion.

Just about when we were about to get to the mission's goal, we ran out of food. We found some berries and to this day I wish I could tell that they were bad. Brian was so hungry he popped them in his mouth, and then he clutched his stomach and fell on the ground. His eyes were a crazy shade of red and his face a crazy shade of purple.

Our real mission was to plant bombs at the general's house. Most of us used old weapons so we were mad at the bombing. The normal army was busy, so we had to. Since the pay was high, we agreed. That part was easy, but still, another girl died. Some kind of spider bit her when we were in the jungle, and when she saw the bite she went crazy. We had to tie her up, and she got trapped with the bomb. At least it was a quick death.

I got mad at the deaths in the jungle, so I called the radio and yelled at the people there to pick us up before we got bitten by spiders or the enemy bombed us. After a lot of swearing, they agreed, and it took an hour for a helicopter to reach us. We had ten of us originally, but came back with five. I told them I would never go through a jungle again, no matter what. They got mad at me since you can't talk back, and decreased by pay. Still, the pay was a lot.

"How did it go?"

That's what my parents always asked me, no matter how much they knew I hated it. I never answer because I don't want them to know about the million deaths I witnessed.

That was also the first form of talking in the book.

I look back to that day all the time. Those horrible deaths, mostly.

That wasn't even a big journey. It was small compared to the others. The mission took about twenty hours.

My other journeys took days, months, and maybe even more.

Depression, guilt, regret.

That's what my second journey gave me.
