The walk from Nevermore to downtown Jericho was twenty minutes. In that time, Y/N managed to listen to the entire Times Daily podcast for the day. She listened to it everyday, always making room to be informed. Plus, she liked the podcast's host — his voice was engaging and familiar to her.

As soon as she arrived to the small-town grocery store, and stepped through its doors, she was greeted with the small chime of a bell announcing her arrival. Still with her Airpods in, warding off any unwanted social interaction, she made her way down the aisles in search for the necessary ingredients for a 'cookie party'.

She had been wise enough to change out of her uniform, meaning she got no extra unwanted attention that the black and purple pinstripes seemed to attract. Instead, her nice jeans and big brown sweatshirt seemed normal, and comfortable. She always wore brown when she was out, because it seemed to dull down the whiteness of her eyes.

In her cart, she had gathered pre-made cookie dough, extra chocolate chips, butter, microwaveable popcorn, chips, milk, and hot chocolate mix. Now, she was kneeling in one aisle studying the many different marshmallows, trying to make her pick.

An unfamiliar group of boys rounded the aisle, thought she couldn't see them yet.

"Woah," Lucas stopped in his tracks, followed closely by his two best friends, "New chick. Is she from Jericho?"

"Maybe she's a Nevermore student," One of the boys suggested, looking at Lucas for some approval or agreement. Then Y/N turned towards them just a bit to reach for a different brand of marshmallows, and they all saw her eyes.

"Definitely a Nevermore girl," Lucas nodded and agreed, "A pretty one, though."

The three boys made their way down the aisle as Y/N listened to updates about the economic conditions in Canada. They were halfway through talking about Trudeau's meeting with oil executives when two hands reached just next to her to grab a bag of pink snowflake marshmallows.

"Oh, sorry! I'll get out of the way," Y/N said, grabbing two bags of mini marshmallows and stepping back from the selection.

"No, no — don't apologize. I'm Lucas, by the way, you?"

She looked at the human boy, and could tell he was trouble. She supposed he was handsome, with strong facial features and he was well-groomed, but his aura was tainted with something she didn't like.

"Y/N," She smiled, "I'm new to the area. Nice meeting you." She quickly excused herself and made a beeline for the check out, which thankfully had no line. She purchased a few reusable bags (realizing she had none), packaged her items and prepared herself for the twenty minute walk by starting her favorite playlist on shuffle.

She was five minutes in the direction of the school when she felt something off — despite the solitude of the walk, three forces were rushing in behind her.

Turning around, she saw the boys running to her — two of them carrying leaking water guns. Before she could weigh her options, instincts kicked in and her hand was raised outward to them, and they were forced to stop by some otherworldly force. Y/N didn't understand how she was doing it, but she knew she had caused them to freeze. Slowly, she lowered her hand, and the three boys ran away in shock and fear after being released from their frozen state.

"Woah," she whispered, looking down at the hand. She had — a few times — managed to levitate small objects or open doors and turn off lights with telekinesis, but this was the first time she managed it against people.
