CHAPTER TWELVE

CONFRONTATIONS

While waiting for Kaeya to open the door, Luma tugged at their hair nervously, taking deep breaths to mentally prepare themselves for what they wanted to talk about with him today. They had decided the night prior at the sleepover with the girls that the next day would be the day they had that conversation.

"Hey." "Hi," Luma greeted him, dropping their hands as soon as Kaeya opened the door. Luma smiled as he let them in. "Diluc's at the cafe studying by the way," Kaeya said. "Nerd," Luma joked, turning their head back to smirk at him. He chuckled slightly and followed them into his room.

Taking a seat on his bed, they took another deep breath before looking up at Kaeya. "What's wrong?" He asked in a concerned tone. "Nothing, nothing. Um..." They trailed off, looking around the room awkwardly. He sighed, knowing what was affecting them. "You wanna talk, don't you?" He asked, making Luma turn back to face him.

Fumbling with their hands nervously, they nodded. Kaeya figured they were going to have to talk about it at some point. Since Luma wanted to address it now, he wasn't going to go against their wishes and hold off.

"You broke my heart, you know?"

Their tone made Kaeya's heartache. He knew he did. It was one of his biggest regrets. He wishes he could reverse time. He wasn't going to bite back and tell them the feeling was mutual. Kaeya knew he was fully to blame in the situation.

"I know...I'm sorry," he apologized genuinely. "Really. I mean it." It felt like a weight was lifted off his chest, finally being able to say what he's needed to say all these years. "You deserved to hear that a long time ago. I just...after being rejected and seeing the look of betrayal on your face, I couldn't bring myself to face you," he explained. Luma nodded, taking in every word, gulping as they looked to the side. They held back tears. They felt like it happened too long ago to cry over the situation.

Luma was hesitant to ask him why he confessed. They were still dead set on thinking it was a prank. It wasn't uncommon for boys to pretend to confess to Luma in middle school. At the end of the day, it was all a prank. But, Luma still didn't expect someone they considered their friend to stoop so low and join the other assholes in playing with Luma's feelings.

Kaeya was hesitant to tell them the confession wasn't a prank. Even if there were rumors Luma returned his feelings back then, they surely were long gone now. But, he still wanted to let them know he still cared.

"Despite everything...I never stopped caring for you, as a friend." He tensed at the word "friend". Luma was so much more than that to him. No one compared to Luma in his eyes. They were an extraordinary person he admired and loved. Even with his feelings being buried, no one took Luma's place in his eyes.

"I promise I'll work to earn your forgiveness. No matter how long it takes," he said. Luma looked in his eye only to see he was being genuine. They looked away immediately after, slightly scared of the eye contact. "I'm glad we talked about this," Luma replied, looking back up. "At least we can move forward together in this fake relationship."
