Aki wasn't too confident as he stepped into the Public Safety building. Makima had called him earlier, and hearing her buttery voice was enough to have him in the car by the time she hung up. He was not on board with the whole thing, of course, he understood it was procedure, but the thought of having to replace his partner so soon after her death made his stomach churn.
He turned the corner where he saw Makima standing in the hallway where the devils in Public Safety were kept, her hands neatly resting behind her as she turned her gaze towards Aki.
"So glad you could make it," Makima chimed.
"Was it even really a choice to come here?"
Makima smiled softly, "I have some very important news for you."
"I assume this is regarding my new partner?"
"Of course. Normally we give people a grieving period, but with so many people targeting Denji, I'm afraid we have to skip that procedure. And, since the threat is higher, I have decided to assign you a rather strong partner."
"Meaning?"
"I am assigning you a devil."
Aki's eyes widened, "With all due respect, Ms. Makima, there is no way I can work with a-"
"I took that into consideration," She interrupted, "Which is why I've selected three devils that I believe you will at least be able to tolerate. They'll be in Division 4 regardless, but I believe that, especially in this instance, you deserve to at least decide who you run patrols with."
"What if I don't find one?"
"Trust me," Makima's intense gaze met his eyes, "You will."
Aki shut his mouth and began following behind Makima towards the cell where his new partner was being kept. "Is she out of her fucking mind?" Aki thought as he watched his feet, "Seriously, I just lost my best friend, and now she wants me to get back to work? Assign Denji another partner if that's the issue!"
Makima stopped at the second to last stall in the long corridor and beckoned toward Aki. He listened obediently and looked with bated breath where Makima had his new potential partners. Just as he had said, three devils were in the cell, two ranting about something while the other one sat in the corner. Aki observed them all, his eyes darting between the two hyper ones and the tamer one.
"That one's the shark fiend," Makima pointed towards the more hyper of the three, "Beam's a handful, but you'll manage. He's intangible, so make sure to keep an eye on him."
"Great," Aki scoffed in his mind, "As if taking care of Denji and Power wasn't enough."
"The one there is the violence fiend. You'll love Galgali, he's rather intelligent, polite, and low-maintenance. "
"Can't say that for any devil."
"And the one on the floor is the Angel Devil. Don't worry about him in particular, he doesn't care enough to escape. Don't make skin-to-skin contact with him or he'll absorb your lifespan"
At the mention of his name, it perked its head up and stared at Aki. The two made eye contact for a while before Aki scoffed and looked away, the devil putting his head down in return. As much as Aki didn't want to admit it, there was something about him that was more appealing than the others, but he couldn't quite figure out what it was.
"I'll leave you four to it then." Makima tossed the cell keys into Aki's hands as she walked away.
All three devils were quiet now, turning to Aki with anticipation in their eyes as he turned the key. "This is fucking nuts," Aki sighed, "She really expects me to be alone with these three? I mean, I could kill them with ease if the need arose, but the idea is batshit!"
"Alright, you three heard Ms. Makima, get out here."
Beam and Galgali left the cell obediently, but Angel remained curled up in the corner, his wings covering him. Aki rolled his eyes, saying words in his head that I couldn't possibly repeat out loud. He waited for a minute, clearing his throat a few times to get his attention. When that didn't work, he took the next logical approach.
"Come on, I'm not waiting around for you." Aki's stern voice echoed throughout the hallway.
Seemingly in protest, Angel shrunk further down.
Aki pointed to the other two devils, "You two, stand by the wall where I can see you, and don't move. If you move, I'll kill you."
Beam and Galgali nodded, standing by the wall in front of the cell where Angel was holding out, continuining their conversation from earlier. Aki took a deep breath before stepping into the cell. He didn't want to fight this, but if this devil was playing games, Aki would join him.
"Get out before I drive this sword through yout throat," He motioned to his sword.
Angel looked up at him with an expression of apparent boredom, "Please do, it's better than working here."
The devil's words made Aki pause in a mix of confusion and anger. Was he truly ready to die? Or was he simply testing him to see where his morals lied? It was a difficult question indeed, and Aki's whirling mind was in no condition to solve it as he watched Angel meticuliously.
"Just get out," Galgali sighed, "If you die in there, Ms. Makima will make Beam and I clean it up."
"I really don't want to spend my day wiping your blood off the floor," Beam piped up.
Angel rolled his eyes, "What do I get in return?"
"Seriously? A devil looking for something in return?" Aki scoffed.
"Look, we didn't choose this, and you guys practically use us a slave labor," Angel leaded against the wall, "Besides, if you kill me, that'll be one less thing to fight the gun devil."
"He has a point," The voice in Aki's mind chimed.
Aki grritted his teeth in loathing as he glared down at the little shit who had made his morning more difficult. "Seriously," He wondered, "Why in Hell did Makima thing this was a good idea?" Still, Angel had a point. Aki took a deep breath and reached in his pocket, searching to see if he had cigarettes on him.
"What do you want?"
Angel grinned, ""Get me some ice-cream, and I'll do whatever stupid task you want of me."
Aki rolled his eyes, slipping a glove onto hos hand before offering it to Angel to take, "Deal."
