I was nervous waiting for Minho to finish talking. Nick kept a straight face the whole time and I couldn't help but question what was wrong with him. Had I done something? It was weird, he started acting this way after Newt had hugged me. The day he confessed his love for me.
I picked at my cuticles. Nervous for what Nick was gonna say. He finally looked at me and all I saw in his eyes was fear. "You still want to be a Runner?" I was too scared to speak so I nodded. He sighed. "If I told you no, would you go against me and still run."
"What?"
He shook his head. "I shouldn't have asked you that." He paused. "Ultimately, it's up to you Minho."
Minho shrugged. "We've been needing a fresh face. And she actually wants to be a Runner. She's good, why should I keep her from something she's good at?"
Nick bobbed his head. "I'll let Clint know you'll be working with him on your days off."
I was slow to realize and it wasn't until Minho was clapping me on my back that it hit me. "Welcome to the Runners shankette."
I smiled and laughed. "Thanks."
"You have to promise me that you'll take care of her, Minho."
"You know I will."
"Promise me." Nick's voice was hard.
Minho stared at him just as hard. "I promise with my life." Nick was satisfied with that answer. Minho smiled again. "This calls for a celebration. Maybe I can convince Gally to make some of his drink."
"Minho-" The Runner was already out the door. Nick just shook his head. When he noticed that I was still there he frowned. "Did you need something?"
"Are you mad at me?" My rushed question threw him off. "It's just that you haven't looked at me since the other day. And then yesterday when I asked you if you were okay, you basically gave me the cold shoulder." He didn't answer me, just stared at his feet. I just blinked and sighed. "Never mind."
I made to leave but he asked a question I never wanted to leave his mouth. "Do you like Newt?"
"What?" I turned. His face was unreadable. "Why would you ask that?"
"You never gave me an answer. And I see how you look at Newt." I blushed. "I'm sure everyone sees it. Maybe except Newt himself."
I scoffed. "You're jealous." It was a question. He seemed offended by that but didn't deny it. "You said I didn't have to give you an answer right away."
"Seems like you're not going to give me an answer at all."
I glared at him. "I don't actually owe you an answer. After this little thing, I don't think you'll be getting an answer. Not now at least."
He laughed but he didn't find it funny. "Who has been defending you this whole time? If it wasn't for me, you wouldn't even be a Runner."
"I never asked you to defend me. . I am grateful for that, but you can't just throw that back in my face because I didn't tell you I love you back."
"Do you?"
I looked at him incredulously. "Of course I do. I just haven't really figured out which one yet. It was kind of hard with everything I've been through in a short period of time." I choked over my words, tears burning my eyes.
Nick's face softened. "I'm sorry. I'm being selfish." He wrapped his arms around me.
"You are." I felt him laugh. "Why didn't you just talk to me about all of this?"
