Supplies were being taken out of the box when we got back and we would have to wait to see the greenie until after the map was created. I had to correct Jack a lot, but he had good spirit and thanked me for allowing him to run with me. It was no problem for me.
Realistically, any other Runner would have been qualified for the job since they had more experience, but I guess Minho trusted me more. I showered with Nick and asked who was the new greenie.
"He's a little younger and fatter, but so far he's a good kid. I left him with Newt." My heart broke at that. I was sure that we were still young, not even eighteen yet, so for this kid to be only a little younger was still too young to be here. But it was a good thing he was with Newt right now. "He's even younger than we were when we came up, maybe by like two years." Omg.
Newt was in the gardens, tending to a patch of tomatoes. He was talking to who I assumed the greenie was, thanks to Nick's description. He was a little chubbier, but I wouldn't say fat. He seemed disinterested with Newt's chosen topic of discussion.
"I don't think he cares for tomatoes that much." I said as we walked up to them. The boy looked up and I almost burst into tears. It was obvious he had been crying, tear marks stained his cheeks and his eyes were red. "Oh my..."
The greenie's eyes widened and he looked even younger. "You're a girl."
"That I am."
"Are you the only girl? You're the only one I've seen."
"Sadly yes I am." I crouched beside him. "Do you remember your name?"
"Charles. But it's the only thing I remember." His eyes filled with tears again. My throat tightened and I had to hold back my tears.
"Hey," I held his face, wiping his tears. "You'll be okay. We all don't remember much before coming up into the Maze. But we can make new memories, yeah? Charles sounds like a name for an old man. "Can I call you Chucky? Is that okay?" Chuck nodded and sniffed, fighting off the rest of his tears.
"How about I take you on a tour, Chucky? Show you around, have you meet the others." Chuck looked like he didn't really want to, but he still nodded, standing and dusting the dirt off his knees. "Thanks Newt."
"Anytime."
We walked around with Chuck, explaining the Glade to him. The job system, but he was just a kid, I didn't know what he would be able to do. He shouldn't even be here. Like yeah, we were kids just like him, but he was even younger. He should be with his parents, hanging out with his friends. Doing anything other than being here.
At dinner, Nick pulled at my eyebrows. "You frown any harder, your face will get stuck like that."
I pushed his hand away. "How can the creators send a literal child up?" I looked over where Chuck had found a spot with Minho. Thankfully his tears were gone and replaced with a smile. "What purpose does it serve them?"
"I don't know, but you can't stress yourself over that. He's here now, we just have to make sure he survives it." I nodded and continued eating my food. "Besides, I don't want you to be upset tomorrow."
He pulled me to his side and I smiled at the reminder. "You're right." I dropped the topic for now. I didn't want to ruin the mood for tomorrow, but I couldn't get the fact that Chuck was just a child out of my head. It just wasn't fair.
The day started with breakfast in bed and so many rounds of fun. There wasn't even peace in the showers because Nick was all over me again.
"Nick, what if someone hears us?"
He tightens his grip on my waist and smirks. "Well I guess you'll have to keep quiet then."
For lunch he took me to the deadheads, somewhere far from the actual dead people. "Did you plan to keep me far away from the others? Make sure they can't hear when you kill me?"
