The Dark Side - A Niall Horan Fanfiction - Chapter 24
I stepped out of the big black van that hauled my entire family here.
To the graveyard.
The familiar scenery and decor surrounded me as I urged myself not to cry for the fifth time this morning.
It has officially been three years since Mason died.
The bright sun scorched down on us, the birds chirping, making it seem like nothing sad had happened; nobody lost a little angel. My great aunt walked up to me, placing a bouquet in my arms before pulling me into a bone crushing hug.
"Hello Aunt Lucy." I mumbled as she let go of me. The next hour was full of hugs, tears, and I'm sorry's. I sort of gave up on addressing everyone, not only because I'm lazy but I honestly didn't have any energy. I felt someones hand on my shoulder and turned to find my brown eyed best friend.
"Zayn." I smiled, practically tackling him in a huge embrace.
"Hey babe, how you holding up?"
"By a very thin string." I whispered, gnawing my bottom lip to keep from bursting into tears. He just nodded and looked at the ground, obviously nervous about something. My eyebrows knitted together and I went to ask him if he was okay, but I was pulled into a huge hug from the one and only, Harry Styles.
Then Louis Tomlinson.
Then Liam Payne.
I hugged them back, my eyes meeting the person I honestly didn't expect to see, especially here.
Niall.
I awkwardly waved and crossed my arms behind my back, "Thank you guys so much for coming, really, it means a lot to me." I said softly, staring straight into Niall's eyes as I spoke.
"Wouldn't miss it for the world." Louis smiled sadly and hugged me again. My grandma wobbled up to me and took my hand in hers.
"Hello, pumpkin, how are you?"
"I'm fine, you?" I pulled her fragile body into my arms and gave her a gentle squeeze.
"I'm alright, well you're obviously busy, I'll see you inside, but before you come in, pull that dress down, that is way too short."
I looked down at my outfit, blushing, and waving back to her. The chunky bracelet was on my left wrist, covering that tattoo, and the light m bracelet was on my right, clearly showing off my 'Mason' tattoo.
"That is so cool." Liam smiled, pulling my wrist to get a closer look at it.
"Thanks." I sighed, following the crowd of people through the field of grass to the large building in the center of the graveyard. Every year, we come here on this day and have a 'birthday party' thing for Mason, just to act like he is still here.
There was food everywhere, people laughing, striking conversation, catching up, then there is me.
Sitting in the corner.
Alone.
Watching people laugh. Honestly, I don't know how they could laugh when all I'm thinking about is how much I miss my brother. My head started pounding from the obnoxious happiness that filled the room and decided to get some fresh air.
I quietly slipped out the door, making my way to a park bench that was perched at the top of a hill, overlooking the entire lot of gravestones, Mason's being front and center. I plopped down onto it and took a deep breath, rubbing my tired eyes and resting my elbows on my knees.
It really was a beautiful day, the weather was perfect, so nice you didn't even think about it. I laid my head back and closed my eyes, finally about to clear my head when someone sat down next to me.
I turned my head slightly, meeting eyes with the same blue eyed boy I have been yearning to touch.
"Hey."
"Hi." I squeaked, sitting up straight again.
"I guess we didn't say a proper hello." he chuckled nervously, twiddling his thumbs.
"I guess."
"So, why are you out here. Wait, I'm dumb, I guess the answer to that question is kind of obvious."
I smiled and averted my gaze back to the pavement, "What are you doing out here?"
"Oh, well, um, the boys and I got something trending on twitter for you and Mason." he handed me his phone, the screen lit up with the worldwide trends, and right at the top was, #PrayersForKayleeAndMason.
Tears prickled my eyes and I looked up at him, "Thank you." I whispered, looking at the screen again.
I just wanted to hug him. Even for him to simply poke me would brighten my mood.
"I miss you." he blushed, obviously just as shocked that it came out of his mouth as I was.
"I miss you too." I said softly, sparing him the embarrassment.
He looked at me, as if to ask if I was serious, "Um, so what have you been up to?"
"Oh, I'm just so busy." I sighed sarcastically, staring back out at the scenery in front of us.
"I saw the videos. Thank you for sticking up for me, and I'm sorry for getting you kicked out of school. Oh, and I'm truly sorry for calling you a slut. I was just... Mad. I really don't think of you that way. Another thing I'm sorry for is for calling you suicidal-" I raised my hand to stop him, showing there was no need for apologies, from him atleast.
"Thank you. I'm sorry for everything, too. Especially for freaking out on you, that was completely unessisary and uncalled for. And, it wasn't your fault I got expelled, that bitch was practically asking for it. Then I'm sorry for calling your fans bitches, I know they are your world."
He looked at me and just stared into my eyes, as if he would find the words he wanted to say in them.
"Hey Kaylee?"
"Yea?" I said a little too anxiously.
"Do you think we could....."
