(Part 1 of The Apprentice Part 1)

The chase seemed endless. Endlessly on Slade's tail, running forever onward. Desert. Rocks. Dead of night. An obstacle course, forever onward. Robin chased Slade; his greatest enemy. A madman who needed to be stopped and put to justice. Forever running still.

It was the end of the line. No where else to jump. They landed on a rock platform, high up, four pillars surrounding them. "Dangerous behavior, Robin," Slade said, walking out from behind a pillar, "Must be very eager to see me. I'm flattered." Slade began walking toward Robin. "I'm not here to see you. I'm here to stop you." Robin said, words laced with hatred as he kept a fighting stance.

"But how can you stop me when you dont even know what I'm planning?" Slade asked, circling the boy. A second later they stopped, long enough for Robin to reply. "Like this." He said, going in for a kick. Inevitably, Slade dodged. In anger, Robin went for a punch, in which Slade dodged, causing Robin to punch one of the pillars.

The fight continued. No one could land a hit. That was, until Robin threw another punch. But alas, Slade had caught his hand mid-punch. He threw Robin over his shoulder while giving him a punch to the gut. Robin, instead of hitting the pillar painfully, used it as a spring board to launch back at Slade with another punch. Slade dodged again, causing Robin to punch the pillar behind Slade.

The fight continued to be Robin attacking the pillars, missing his enemy completely. Slade was able to land a kick, sending Robin flying across the platform. Robin came back with an attack, but Slade blocked, and punched Robin in his face. Robin tumbled yet again to the other side of the platform. Though, he got up rather quickly.

He threw two of his birdarangs at the man. Slade blocked with the metal guards on his forearms, sending the weapons to crash and take down two pillars. Like dominos, they sent the other two pillars crashing to the ground. Through the smoke and chaos, Robin kept his guard up, searching for Slade. He did not know the man stood behind him.

"Excellent Robin. We appear to be evenly matched and equally ruthless. Not surprising. You and I are so very much...alike." Robin realized the voice was coming from behind him and whipped around. "I'm nothing like you!" He growled. He gave Slade an uppercut to the chin, catching him off-guard and causing him to fall.

"You're a criminal; a psychopath. All you care about is destruction." Robin snarled, grabbing Slade by his shirt as if to shake him down. "And all you care about, you destroy." Slade said, gesturing to the broken pillars in which had morphed into Cyborg, Raven, Beastboy, and Starfire's faces. They were shattered and the faces had a look of distress. Everyone of them did.

"No..." Robin gasped in disbelief, turning his attention back to Slade. His disbelief quickly turned into anger. "Who are you!?" He yelled, throwing Slade's mask far off the platform. Robin was filled with shock seeing the man behind the mask. He knew him well, for it was... himself. Slade laughed, mocking Robin.

There was a flash of light.

Robin jolted awake, face soaked in sweat. It was another night he fell asleep at his desk surrounded by clues and news articles. Robin breathed heavily, gasping for breath, trying to calm himself upon realizing it was only a nightmare.

Only a moment later, his door opened. Robin whipped around to find Cyborg standing in his doorway.

"It's him...," Cyborg started. "It's Slade."
