Poet's Madness

The life of a poet can be a curious thing indeed.

Striving to blend words and deliver a thought,

Without letting your sanity drift away and bleed.

Words can seem to be too plentiful or too few,

Mixed metaphors might serve only to

Confuse the desired point of view.

Alliteration will only ever work if you

Are actually aware of an arrangement and authentic

Definition of what it is.

A workman only becomes a craftsman

When he learns to master using all his tools.

A scribbler only becomes a wordsmith

When he recognises that we are all fools.

A good poet must possess a wide vocabulary,

He must know precisely how to choose each word with certainty.

He must become well acquainted with grammar and syntax,

Else the critics will devour him and smite him with their axe.

Punctuation helps and so does the ability to rhyme,

Without these skills he will probably just be wasting his time,

He has so much that he feels he wants to say,

But the way he writes down on paper, well that is just  a crime.

This knowledge and realisation will induce a certain sadness.

But he will struggle on to write his works,

He cannot stop, this is the poet's madness.
