Poet's Therapy

A poet was feeling very low, struggling for his art,

Went to see his GP to fix his yearning heart,

The GP was baffled as to what treatment would be best,

So arranged for the poet to have a psychiatric test.

This worried our friend, the poet, he was fearful of the shrink,

He had written on this theme before with green, yellow and red ink,

Still, he realised that it may help him step back from the brink.

He would take some of his best work and show it to the shrink.

He is in the psychiatrist's office but does not know what to say,

He asks her to read his poetry, that may be the way

To highlight his problems and show her how he feels,

Then she may have a solution and help him start to heal.

The psychiatrist is silent while she reads his words,

She pauses to reflect on this poet's current plight,

Has she seen the problem, has his voice been heard?

Her smile makes the poet hopeful that things will be put right.

In gentle and soothing voice the psychiatrist began to explain

Her analysis of why the poet is experiencing such pain.

'It is clear to me you see the world and all its problems too,

You have a very different, unique and complex view,

You want people to believe you, attention to be paid,

But, really, I think your problem is, you just need to get laid!.'
