Chapter 7
It was Saturday, and there absolutely nothing laid out for the day. I wanted nothing more than to stay home and read, but nothing ever went according to my lazy-day plans.
When I had reached the bottom of the stairs, and entered the kitchen on the left, I was rummaging through the pantry trying to find something to eat. That was my first forever fatal fault: had I not eaten that day- my life would still be the same boring way it always had been. But, this basic need for food was the catalyst for my future.
"You're going on a date." My mother sizes me up, eyes hauntingly cold. Serious.
"Your funny." I mumble, taking my apple up the stairs and to my bedroom. My mother follows me, hands me a dress and forces me into it. "You're serious? You're really going to put me on a blind date? On a Saturday!"
She laughs, hauntingly, "Saturday's are perfect for dates!"
"Fridays are perfect for dates."
"Have you been on a date?"
"No..."
"Then don't argue."
After at least on hour getting my makeup and hair done, my mother runs out of the hall bathroom, to the right, to her bedroom. When she returns with my outfit I understand why she used so much brown and gold sparkly eyeshadow.
"Mom, this is supposed to be a date, not prom!" I gripe, wishing nothing more than to steal the ball gown and toss it back into the depths of the walk-in closet my mother glorifies. It was long and princess-y, strapless gold top then curving outward to a brown skirt. The satin top looked like it could be comfortable for a long night, but it was worried how sweaty I would become later.
"What?" She stokes it, pulling the hem of the skirt outward and turning the dress toward herself. "Do you not like it?"
I swallow, hastily, "Of course I like it, it is beautiful, but for a first date with three guys..."
She chuckles to herself for a moment, "My dear, you will only be going with one man tonight. I think the boy Nick has taken a liking to you the most. Apparently, as word would have it, he cannot stop talking about you! Plus, his family is rich: with wealth and magic. I want you to get to know him tonight; he would be a lovely spouse and husband. A strong leader, powerful, and not to mention: his is very considerate."
Considerate, we are talking about the same Nick right? The guy who was sauntering around my belongings and commenting on them like I was some child?
That was the most ridiculous lie I have ever heard: so I laugh.
"What is so funny?" My mother hangs the dress in the doorway, by a white plastic hanger, and steps toward me.
I suck down any spit, and stand straight. My stomach still hurt from all of my outward laughing, but it could not be helped. This was seriously bullpoopy!
"You get a hold of yourself, right now, or you will never find love. I will lock you in a cage, like Rapunzel, in a faraway tower. How does that sound? Huh?" Her face is merely centimeters from mine, and I was able to smell her breath. She had just brushed her teeth, but I can still smell the early morning breakfast that clung to the back of her throat.
Once again I wanted to laugh in her face; I was the "evil born child": I should not have to fear my own mother for God's sake. I held my breath and cleared my face of emotion, "Fine." I snap at her, "I will put the dress on and go wherever we are being taken. Are you happy?"
"Yes." She takes the dress off the hanger, and hands it to me expectantly. "And do not mess up your hair; you have no idea how hard it is to put such thick hair into a twisted bun."
As long as she is happy, I will stay happy.
I was only worried that I would not be able to give Nick a chance, because that would most definitely not make my mother happy. I am evil, after all.
