Kitty hates me :(

So today at school, xXlosangelesXx and saw the school cat hiding in a bush (not really). So, I began stroking it.

I moved the ferns away to reveal its face and suddenly it lashed out. I pulled back at once and thankfully wasn't scratched, but the kitty's paw remained clutching at the ferns with a claw sticking out.
