"Dad! Dad! Daddy! Dad! Will you sing us a song?" Indigo bounced up and down at Thunder's side, Sky in tow, rubbing one eye socket with her fist.
"If it'll calm you down." Thunder obliged, smiling gently. He turned momentarily to Shadow. "You go on ahead. I'll get the kids to sleep."
"Alright," Shadow responded. Thunder quickly kissed his cheek, and Indigo mimed gagging, making Sky giggle.
"Okay, c'mon, goofball." Thunder guided the two smaller skeletons to their room. Indigo hopped up on the bed immediately, sitting cross-legged and waiting intently - and a bit impatiently - to get his song. Thunder sat down on the edge and picked Sky up, who was too small yet to climb up on her own, and set her down in his lap. "Do you know what song you want?" Thunder asked.
"Umm...no..."
"Okay, I have one."
"Okay!"
With that, Thunder took a breath, and began to sing.
Puff the magic dragon, Lived by the sea
And frolicked in the morning mist
In a land called Honah lee...
Little Jackie Paper
loved that rascal Puff
And brought him strings, and sealing wax,
and other fancy stuff
Oh, Puff, the magic dragon, lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist,
in a land called Honah Lee
Puff, the magic dragon, lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist,
in a land called Honah Lee
Together they would travel
on a boat with billowed sail
Jackie kept a lookout perched
on Puff's gigantic tail
Noble kings and princes
would bow when 'er they came
Pirate ships would low'r their flags
When Puff roared out his name
Oh, Puff, the magic dragon, lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist,
in a land called Honah Lee
Puff, the magic dragon, lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist,
in a land called Honah Lee
A dragon lives forever,
but not so little boys
Painted wings and giant's rings
make way for other toys
One gray night it happened,
Jackie Paper came no more
And Puff, that mighty dragon,
he ceased his fearless roar
His head was bent in sorrow,
green scales fell like rain
Puff no longer went to play
along the cherry lane
Without his lifelong friend,
Puff could not be brave
So Puff, that mighty dragon,
sadly slipped into his cave
Oh, Puff, the magic dragon
lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist,
in a land called Honah Lee
Puff, the magic dragon,
lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist,
in a land called Honah Lee
Sky had fallen entirely asleep, but Indigo sat with his brows knit, staring at the blanket beneath him in apparent confusion.
"But...but that doesn't make any sense!" He said, looking the faintest bit angry.
"What doesn't make sense?"
"Why would Jackie Paper leave Puff behind? I thought they were best friends!"
"Well, I suppose best friends don't always stay that way. Jackie Paper had to grow up and do other things."
"But he still could have been friends with Puff!"
"Maybe. I suppose, it's just about how everything changes sometimes. You make friends, and sometimes your friends leave you behind."
"I don't like this song!"
"You don't?"
"No! It's sad!"
"Some of the best songs are sad ones, you know? People write them to show how they feel. Music, a lot of the time, is about showing emotion through sound and lyrics."
"Hmph. Well, I still think it's sad."
"That's alright. You should get to sleep. It's late."
Indigo pouted and crossed his arms. "I'm not tired." Thunder suppressed a smirk. Where had he heard that before?
"You will be in the morning if you don't go to bed." Thunder said. Indigo said nothing. Thunder sighed and stood up, gingerly holding Sky in his arms. "At least rest. Everyone else has to sleep." He set Sky down carefully in her bed, trying his best not to wake her, then walked back to Indigo's. He smiled gently and kissed Indigo's forehead. he straightened up and was turning to leave with a quiet, "Goodnight," when Indigo spoke up.
"W-wait!"
"What's going on?" Thunder turned again with a mild look of concern.
"You...you aren't gonna leave us behind...like Jackie left Puff, are you...?"
"Wha- no, of course not! I wouldn't ever abandon you guys, okay?" Thunder wrapped Indigo in a quick hug.
"...Okay."
"I have to go to bed now, buddy, but I'm not leaving you behind. I would never do that." Indigo nodded, and Thunder released him from his hug and stood up. "Okay, goodnight. I love you, bud."
"Goodnight. I...I love you too, dad."
