kenzie walked in and joe was sitting on the floor in front of the bed, which he seemed to do a lot.
"hi." kenzie said sitting down next to him. she didn't really know what else to say.
"hi." joe replied just above a whisper laying his head on kenzie's shoulder.
"you ok?" kenzie asked after they had sat there in silence for a while.
"no." joe replied honestly. "i let everyone down. they were counting on me. and, i just." joe said, his voice got a little cracky, like he was about to cry so he stopped himself and took a deep breath.
"you didn't let everyone down, joe." kenzie said rubbing his arm with her hand.
"but i did." joe said. "and what's even worse is i let you down."
"how did you let me down?" kenzie asked.
"if we won, i was going to ask you to be my girlfriend." joe said, sighing again. she felt him wipe a tear away from his eye. "and i know that you feel like we aren't going anywhere, and i wanted to ask you just as the perfect moment."
"and now i can't." joe said sighing.
"who says you can't?" kenzie asked with a chuckle which made him chuckle.
"because we lost and that's not very exciting. and i want it to be perfect." joe said.
"us just sitting here is pretty perfect to me." kenzie said.
"but then it isn't a surprise anymore." joe said.
"what isn't a surprise?" kenzie said acting like she didn't know what was going on. "i don't know what you are talking about?"
"really?" joe said sitting up looking at kenzie with an 'are you being serious' face.
"look at my socks." kenzie said taking off her shoes revealing her spongebob socks.
joe looked at her socks, looked at her excited expression, then back at her socks. he cracks a smile.
"those are the stupidest socks i've ever seen in my entire life." joe said laughing. "i love them."
"you have spongebob shoes so i don't want to hear it." kenzie said laughing leaning her head on joe's shoulder.
that sat there, laughing softly as jokes for a little while, joe slipped his hand into kenzie's.
"thank you." joe said to kenzie.
"for what?" kenzie asked looking up at him, confused. what did he have to thank her for?
"for being there for me, all the time." joe said placing a kiss on kenzie's temple.
"you're welcome." kenzie responded placing a kiss on joe's dimple. he always has them when he smiles, one of kenzie's favorite things about him. second place to his eyes.
they both heard a boom, they didn't know what it was. "what was that?" kenzie asked standing up and walking over to the window.
"i don't know." joe said following her.
once they made it to the window, kenzie's expression saddened. they were fireworks, blue and yellow ones.
they had a view of the stadium from the hotel and watched the fireworks silently for a moment. joe imagined if he had just thrown the ball to jamar, those fireworks would be orange and black. bengals fans would be celebrating on the streets, bengals fans would be posting exciting plays from the game.
and most importantly, joe wouldn't be as upset as he is right now. the blue and yellow fireworks flashing colors onto his eyes. his eyes got more glossy the longer he watched.
he sighed and sat down on the edge of the bed. he had his hands locked together and was leaning forward.
kenzie sat down on the floor in front of him, taking his hand in hers.

"it's gonna be ok." kenzie said, rubbing his hand."do you wanna go to paris?" joe asked, like a light bulb sparked in his head.
"what?" kenzie asked. that was so random. who randomly takes a trip to paris after they just lost the superbowl?
"yeah, we can leave on tuesday, come back on saturday." joe said like he was putting the pieces together.
"uh," kenzie said with a nervous chuckle. "this is pretty spontaneous."
"spontaneous is my middle name." joe said standing up.
"it's lee." kenzie said with a straight face.
"shhhhh." joe said. "not it's not." he whispered.
"when am i supposed to believe that?" kenzie asked putting a hand on her hip.
"when the bengals win the super bowl." joe said jokingly. kenzie audibly gasped. maybe it wasn't too soon to make these kinds of jokes if joe was making them himself.
"lighten up, kenzie." joe said laughing. "life is too short to wallow in sadness. you gotta make spontaneous moves, be a half glass full kind of person."
"the wisest words you've ever said." kenzie said chuckling.
"probably." joe said shrugging his shoulders. "but i also came up with that on the spot."
"so we're seriously going to paris?" kenzie asked sitting in the chair by the window.
"better pack your bags, pretty girl." joe said doing a funny dance.
"don't call me that." kenzie said squeezing her eyes shut at the nickname.
"why?" joe asked confused.
"long story." kenzie said rolling her eyes.
"i have time." joe responded sitting down on the edge of the bed.
"this guy, shane, was like harassing me on the plane here." kenzie said rolling her eyes. "and he called me that. he legit undressed me with his eyes."
"got a last name?" joe asked furrowing his eyebrows.
"mmm, it was williams." kenzie said recalling. why did he need to know? "why?"
"this him?" joe said pulling out is phone showing an instagram picture. it was shane.
"yeah, that's him." kenzie said. "do you know him?"
"i went to school with him at ohio state, would never leave me alone." joe said. "even found out where i lived before i moved. he's a total stalker."
"i wouldn't be surprised if he found out you were going to be on the plane and booked the seat next to you." joe said.
"what's that?" joe asked noticing a bruise on kenzie's arm. maybe i didn't mention this before, but he gripped her arm pretty tight.
"it's nothing." kenzie said covering her arm. she didn't want joe worrying.
"who did that to you?" joe asked, a little frustrated. kenzie didn't respond.
"who did that to you." joe said again. "was it shane?" joe asked as kenzie nodded.
"i'm gonna kill him, i swear." joe said pushing himself off of the bed, looking for his shoes.
"no, you're not." kenzie said putting her hand on his chest to stop him from leaving. "it's not worth it."
