Grace positioned the record player behind the big dining room table. She softly placed the stylus on the record and the record started playing. "During extreme weather conditions, a climber must possess the wisdom to determine," the record played. Just then a bell rang and the children came running down the stairs for breakfast. "when evacuation is inevitable. A controlled alpine descent, begins with the grinding of one's lions and the anchoring of the climbing rope to one's enemy, the mountain. The Dülfersitz rappel is the preferred method for descent when the rope is the only available tool, but must be regarded as a last resort. Begin by looping the rope..." All seven children stood next to their seats, Vanya at the end of the table while her father sat across her by the head of the table. Reginald walked in and took his seat before commanding the children to sit down. Eight maids came in with silver platters, placed it down in front of Reginald and the children before leaving the room. Reginald nods his head and the children take off their platter's lid and start eating. "A screen anchor must be used if the rope is to be successfully retrieved from the face of the mountain. Tightly knot the ends of the rope. Once anchored, thread the double rope through the legs, front to back, and around the buttocks. It is of utmost importance that the rope be drawn under the gluteal muscles, not through the crevice between the gluteus. Proceed by holding the rope diagonally-" While the record was playing and all of his other siblings were feasting on the splendid breakfast provided, Five was looking at his father. He took the butter knife next to him and banged it into the table. The rest of his siblings looked to Five and then to their father. Reginald looked up from his newspaper. "Number Five?" "I have a question," Five said, not breaking eye contact with his father. "Knowledge is an admirable goal, but you know the rules. No talking during mealtimes. You're interrupting Herr Carlson," his father replied to him, and continued to read his newspaper. Five clenched his teeth before he took the knife out of the table and the siblings resumed eating. "I want to time travel," Five said after a while. "No." "But I'm ready. I've been practising my spatial jumps, just like you said." To prove his point, Five spatial jumped next to his father.
"See?" "A spatial jump is trivial compared with the unknowns of time travel. One is like sliding along the ice, the other is akin to descending blindly into the depths of the freezing water and reappearing as an acorn," his father told him, not looking up from his newspaper. Five grew angry at this and snapped at his father, "Well I don't get it." "Hence the reason you're not ready." Five looked to the end of the table and saw Vanya. She shook her head but Five being Five continued arguing with his father. "I'm not afraid." Five was becoming irritated by his father, not understanding his desire. "Fear isn't the issue. The effects it might have on your body, even on your mind, are far too unpredictable. Now I forbid you to talk about this anymore!" At this statement Five stormed out of the room to the outside of the house. "Number Five! You haven't been excused! Come back here!" Reginald yelled after Five but all in vain.
