All Nicole could think was how unlucky, and on Waverly's birthday too. "I'm sorry," she replied. "How did it happen?"

Waverly placed the barely touched celery stick on a paper plate before her. She leapt from the flat stone being used as a seat, marching off towards the water. "Come on, let's check if the sea's left us any fairy windows." A snort had her stop and turn, seeing the amused look on Nicole's face. "They'll take them before I can build my towers."

Nicole was up, still staring at her. "Fairy windows. We don't get many of those in Reading."

"Well then, Reading must be really boring."

"There's graffiti. Although, the council gets rid of it fairly quickly." Nicole grinned as her brain found a way to add a dash of sauciness. "Fairy quickly."

Waverly turned away before Nicole could see the smile on her face. The beach usually gave up handfuls of its precious sea glass on each visit, allowing her to place piece upon piece to form a small stack. "There's one," she called out, lifting a smoothed blue object from its resting place.

Nicole began studying the pebbles close to her feet, not entirely sure what she should be looking for. "Is this one?" she said, holding up a weathered green, at one time part of a bottle.

"Let me see." The beach crunched under Waverly's feet as she approached. She took the piece, holding it skywards to allow the light to pierce its cloudy exterior. Her smile was quickly replaced by a look of surprise. "Behind you!"

"What?" Nicole turned her head to where she was pointing.

"A fairy." She pushed the sea glass into Nicole's hand. "Quick, hide it."

Nicole pocketed the piece before spotting Waverly's impish expression. "Ah, so that's how we play is it?" She put her hand back in her pocket feeling around. "Err, don't want to worry you, but it's gone."

Waverly tried. She'd seen the piece in Nicole's hand, seen it enter her pocket. "Okay, where is it?"

"Fairy took it."

"No really, where is it?" Nicole pointed to Waverly's pocket. Her hand went in, her fingers finding the piece. "How the..." She pulled it out, staring at the green glass between her fingers.

"Must be those fairies hey."

"Yeah, those fairies..." Her voice trailed off, trying to figure out how the hell Nicole had been able to place it there. "Okay, but seriously how?"

Nicole chuckled. "You want to know?"

Waverly nodded, handing over the piece. "Show me."

Nicole closed her fingers around it. "Watch carefully." She slid her closed hand into her pocket, pulling it back out still closed. When she opened it the piece was gone. "Try my pocket."

Waverly pushed her hand in. Nothing.

"Try your pocket."

"How?" she said, pulling out the piece.

"A magician never reveals their secrets."

"Just this once, I've got to know."

"Fairies," Nicole insisted.

"Just show me."

Nicole repeated the trick. "You're focusing on my right hand."

"Obviously."

"Completely focused on my right hand."

"Yes."

Nicole opened it to reveal nothing there.
