"Monroe?"
Oh, he remembers my name.
"You work here?" He questions, standing up so he is towering over me.
"Yeah, my sister-in-law actually owns the place."I giggle awkwardly, heat slowly rising to my cheeks. "I don't know if you've met her yet." I look around the room for her.
"Blonde? Very perky?" He asks, pursing his lips in thought. "Can't remember what she said her name was."
"Brooke?"
"That's it!" He nods. "I'm so bad with names."
He squats down back in front of Bennett. "Baby, do you remember Miss Monroe from the toy store?" He speaks softly.
Her eyes grow wide and she waves, "Hi! You helped me find Daddy!" She giggles, leaning into Harry, who is looking at her with loving eyes.
I nod, crouching down to also be on her level. "I did help you find your Daddy!" I say excitedly. "I get to spend the day with you today! How cool is that?"
"So cool! Daddy stay too?" She asks innocently, her eyes locking to Harry's.
I can see the hurt cross Harry's face.
He tucks one of her curls behind her ear. He shakes his head, "I have to go work, my love. You are going to stay here with Miss Monroe, okay? I'll be right back here to get you. I promise."
She nods, hugging his neck. When she pulls away, she steps closer to me. "Can I play now?"
"Yeah! Here," I pull out her name tag, removing the back of it, "let's put your name tag on." I stick the sticker onto her dress. "You can go play."
She skips off towards the rug, where Jack is still coloring. "Hi, I Bennie. Can I color too?"
Jack immediately nods, scooting over so she can share the coloring book with him. "I'm Jack." He introduces himself, handing her a box of crayons.
We both watch the interaction with smiles on our faces. This is one of the main reasons I love working here, watching the kids make friends and grow into their personalities.
"Are you going to be the one picking her up?" I stand up.
He stands up, nodding. "Yeah, I'll be leaving the station around 5 or so." My eyes fall to his shirt.
"You're a firefighter?"
"Yeah, I work at Station 13." He smiles, sticking his hands in his pockets. "Worked there for about five years now."
"My mom used to work at Station 13! She was an EMT, retired a while back though."
"Really?! Wow! I basically grew up there." He smiles. "Well, I should get going. I'll see you later." He backs away waving at me.
