"Harry?" I feel someone nudge my body

"Harry?" I feel someone nudge my body. "Are you awake?"

"I am now." I rub at my eyes, trying to get them to focus. "What's wrong, Spence?"

"I had a bad dream." She holds onto her teddy tightly. "I went to Mumma's room, but she wasn't there. I'm sorry." She starts to cry.

"No, no," I slide over to make room for her. "It's okay. C'mere."

She slides herself under the cover, tucking herself into my side. "Daddy's drinking again." She speaks softly. "He's yellin'"

"Shhh..." I comfort her. "Don't think about it." I cover her ears to drown out the noise I've become so used to.

Her breathing soon slows showing she's fallen back to sleep, but for some reason sleep never comes for me. I'm too paranoid.

"Harry, get your ass down here!" He screams from downstairs, so loud that it makes me jump slightly. I cover my ears hoping he just gives up. "Don't make me come up there! I know you're awake!"

If I don't go down there the aftermath will just be worse. I learned that the hard way.

I slowly shimmy myself out of bed, trying my best to not disturb Spencer. Before heading downstairs, I tuck her in tight.

Pattering down the stairs, I hear him mumbling incoherently to himself.

"Dad?"

His head snaps my direction and his eyes are full of anger. "You think you can pull a fast one on me?"

"I-"

"C'mere you little shit." His fists bunch up and I make my way over to where he's standing at the fridge.

Once I'm close enough, he roughly grabs onto the back of my neck. "What's missing?" He forces me to look into the refrigerator.

"I don't know." I reply calmly even though my heart is racing a mile a minute.

He scoffs, mumbling, "Unbelievable." His grip tightens, making it harder to breath. "I'm missing a twelve pack. Where is it? I know you took it."

"I didn't. I promise." I choke out. "You probably already drank it."

A sharp sting rises on my cheek from where his palm landed. "Don't talk back to me, boy." He shoves me up against the wall, my head slamming against it. " What did you do with it, huh?"

"Mumma!" I scream, praying that she would magically appear.

"Tell me!" He screams, his hand falling back to my neck. My hands are clawing at his, trying to get him to loosen his grasp.
