A Sweet Tooth For You: Behind the Scenes

The Making of Streber's Sister, Evelyn Part 1

As you may know if you've read my fanfic, Evelyn is Streber's older sister. She's 3 years older than him, and had to resort to practically raising her younger brother after their parents started neglecting Streber and Arnold left for his mission. But what went into making this oc? It actually took a lot more planning than most of my other original characters.

In an earlier draft, Evelyn was going to be Streber's mother
You read that correctly. Evelyn was going to be Streber's mother, who at the beginning of the story would've been only 29 years old, making her only 15 when she had Streber.
But she wasn't neglectful, quite the opposite, actually. They had kind of like a Rory-Lorelai relationship with one another. She was going to be a single mother who was thrown out by her parents when they found out she was pregnant. Arnold was going to be Streber's uncle, who was the closest Streber would've gotten to a father figure. This idea was later scrapped, because I thought the two would be better as siblings.

When I first made Evelyn, she was a side character in a graphic novel that I eventually gave up on.
So, in August of this year, I began working on a graphic novel about a two couples in high school. There was Asriel and Kai, two transgender boys who had been childhood friends, who ultimately ended up living in the same house when Kai was kicked out after being outed to his mother. But even though that hardship was devastating, Asriel had found out that he was pregnant after s/a. So that half of the story would've been about that journey, but the other half was about June and Carrie. The two weren't too open about their feelings, but Carrie was suffering through depression, and June was having homocidal thoughts. Eventually, June couldn't take it anymore and...well...brought a shotgun to school. Asriel had been 7 months pregnant at this point, and Kai was just trying to protect him. But Kai ended up getting shot in the leg, and that's when Evelyn came into play. She tore off part of her sweater, and once it was safe, she carefully approached Kai, and wrapped the sleeve around his leg.
Eventually, I just got tired of the story, and stopped illustrating it. But after the release of Tender Treats, and I had an idea for a fanfic, I thought she'd be the best character to put into the story.
