The original ending

The first draft of the story was going to have only 8 parts, and would end with Kevin going through the 5 stages of grief.
And, in this cut, the characters were a few years older, and Kevin and Streber were married, and adopted a baby named Lydia instead of a kitten.
Because Streber was going to die in the original cut.
A few segments survived, so I'll just put them here.

"Oh my god, Radford, just leave me the f-ck alone!" I screamed. "You have no idea what this feels like!"
Radford looked at me with an expression I'd only ever seen in drama movies.
"Kevin, I just lost my best friend, and it doesn't help that my sister was just diagnosed with cancer! You're not the only one suffering here!" Radford yelled back.
"Yeah, well at least you can find a new best friend! I lost my goddam HUSBAND! I won't be able to find anyone that will love me like he did!" I screamed again, choking back tears. "Just leave me ALONE!"

Seeing his grave was heart wrenching. If I had been there sooner, he would've been here.
There was a bat carved into the stone, with the words, "Here lies Streber. 1995-2022, beloved friend, husband, father, and member of the community."
I placed a black rose, his favorite flower, onto the stone, tears streaming down my face.
Why him?
Why now?
"Daddy, when's Dad coming back?" Lydia asked, standing right beside me.
