The school counselor called Max over. Ara would talk to her too but that wasn't the moment. She headed to the gymnasium for the pep rally they had that morning.
Ara stood in between Matt and Mike who stood beside Dustin. They watched as the cheer team did their performance. The band then started to play.
"Look, I'm not saying that my girlfriend is better than yours. It's just that Susie's a certified genius." Dustin said.
"You do realize Ara helped save the world last year, right?" Mike argued.
"And yet you still have a C in Spanish."
Ara stayed quiet at this comment. Her expression was a tired one. It had been like that for a while now.
The basketball team ran in when the cheer team finished their performance and Max joined the four on the bleachers.
The five applauded along with everyone one else in the gymnasium.
"Good morning, Hawkins High!" Jason exclaimed. "First off, I'd like to thank each and every one of you. Without your support, we wouldn't be here. Give yourselves a big hand."
Lucas wave at Max, something Ara caught, but Max didn't wave back to Lucas' disappointment.
"And of course, of course, I have to give a special shout-out to the best and the prettiest fans of all time, the Tiger Cheer Squad."
The room broke into cheers again.
"Chrissy, I love you, babe." Jason paused. Ara noticed how Matt gagged at this and Mike and Dustin laughed at green eyed boy. "You know, I think I can speak for all of us when I say it's been a though year for Hawkins. So much loss. And sometimes I wonder, 'how much loss can one community take?' In dark days like this, we need something to believe in. So, last night when we were down by ten points at half to Christian Academy, I looked at my team, and I said, think of Jack. Think of Melissa. Think of Heather. Think of Billy."
Ara looked away from the court on down at her shoes. She remembered that faithful night. The night where she saw him for the last time.
"Ara.." she heard a voice call out. It was the voice she used to hear in the void. "Ara.."
"Ara?" Mike said. "You okay?"
"Yeah, I just zoned out. Sorry."
"For us to return home with our heads hung low in defeat?" She heard Jason go on. "No! No. Let's win this game. Let's win this game for them. And that's exactly what we did! We embarrassed those candy-asses in their own house, and now tonight, we're gonna bring home the championship trophy!"
"Tonight?" Dustin questioned. "How is that possible?"
"They call it a tournament." Max stated. "You win one game, you go on until there's only one team left." She went on.
