E-man-ci-pa-tion; noun, twelve letters, five syllables and it's meaning; the fact or process of being set free from legal, social, or political restrictions; liberation and heaven to Tamara Collins.
If Tamara was being honest, it was not the first time she had thought about it but never thought about actually doing it but she was officially done with the dang system and their bullshit. It had all started when her adoptive parents died in a car crash when she was eight years old and she ended up in the foster system and everything went to hell. Now she had finally turned seventeen and was finally allowed to apply for the emancipating forms.
The problem was that she needed both signatures of her parents and they were dead. So her only option was find the biological ones and ask for their signatures. Usually it didn't work that way but for all she knew, in her birth certificate there was no signature of a father so whoever he was, he still had parental rights over her. And when it came to her biological mother, Tamara didn't have any clue where to start from.
Melina Collins a.k.a Tam's mom never talked about Tamara's biological mother stating that she didn't need her, the only thing her mom had ever told her was that her biological mother was a collage student who got knocked up in a one night stand and didn't want anything to do with her so Tamara never brought up the subject ever again knowing it made Melina upset.
And thanks to that, the brunette was currently silently cursing herself. She should had pressured more for information because now she was lost. Tamara had searched everywhere for at least a little of information but couldn't find any, she never thought finding someone could be this hard. There was basically nothing about them, not in Instagram, not in Facebook nor in Snapchat. Not even in the Civil Registration.
And she was now running out of options. Tamara was aware she could still ask Lucy for help but really didn't want to because that meant she would have to explain the older brunette all of her situation and she was almost a hundred percent sure she would be mad or at least disappointed which was way worse. The brunette didn't want to disappoint Lucy.
It would made sense, she had lied to Lucy for months and then the cop would know she was actually just a pathetic orphan. That she had been someone's fuck up and that actually her parents didn't want her. That she wasn't good enough to be adopted or wanted and that no one loved her.
And then she had escaped from her foster home when she broke the foster dad's nose after he started heating on her to say it on a nice way. Tamara had never felt so scared in her life so she left and never came back, lived on the streets for a while and then she found Lucy's ugly and useless car, decided stole it and you know the rest of the story.
So Tamara knew the drill. Lucy had been nice enough to offer her shelter and had been the nicest someone had been to the younger brunette in a long time. So when the orphan caught herself getting way too attached to the older woman and her friends, she knew she had to leave before it was too late.
Besides it was a matter of time before Lucy got sick of her and would kick her out like everyone else did. It always happened and it was the best if the teenager left before that happend, it would hurt less.
And to be honest, technically Tamara didn't lie, all she did was omit information but still knew the other brunette would not appreciate her definition of not lying just hiding information.
On the other hand, she could ask Tim for help but Tamara knew he would then tell Lucy and then the brunette would not have one but two officers yelling at her. But she needed those papers.
There were also Angela and Nyla. They always helped her out when she got in trouble and didn't want Tim and Lucy to find out and scold her. Or they could give her some advise on how to handle the situation like they alway do and then proceed to go and get pizza or tacos and tell her embarrassing stories about Tim and Lucy.
But it was too risky so maybe not the best option either.
She didn't even want a relationship with them, Tamara truly didn't care about them. They abandoned her so why would she want something to do with her. She just wanted their signatures so she could get an apartment and a job and finally be free, no worries about what jerk she would stay with or if she would get any food or even if she would make to the next day without a bruise or struggling to stand up properly.
It was the first time Google hadn't give her the answers she needed, it was kind of disappointing. With a sigh, Tamara closed her laptop and walked out of her room, there wasn't much she could do alone and Lucy was a cop, everything would be faster.
"Lucy! I need to talk to you!" She called out as she fidgeted on her feet.
Not to her surprise Lucy was sitting on the large couch with a book on her hands. The older brunette turned around and gave Tamara a bright smile before patting the empty spot next to her.
With a deep breath, Tamara sat next to her. She didn't even know why was she so nervous, it wasn't that big of a deal, she was just about to expose part of her past to someone she cared about.
She didn't want Lucy to pity her or to make her think she was unlovable and unwanted, even if it was true.
"So... There's something I need to tell you" Tamara wasn't sure on how to even start the conversation.
"Alright, is everything okay? You look nervous, Tam." Lucy said as she put her hand over Tamara's.
Her voice was so soft it made the younger brunette want to cry. She was about to ruin her relationship with Lucy, just like the ones with her High School friends when they found out, they stopped talking to her and started making fun of her.
No one wanted to be friends with a homeless girl.
They had found her sleeping on a bench in the park and that just clear their suspicious. They had already questioned her about why she was always dirty or why did she always wore the same clothes and why did she looked so tired all the time.
She told them her family was poor but then they found her on that bench and Tamara broke under pressure, she usually didn't break that easily but in that moment she had just been kicked out of a home. Her foster mom had blamed her of stealing her pills, thing she never did and then yank her out of the house by the hair.
She was feeling vulnerable and sad at the moment and just broke down in front of people she trusted. That's when she learnt not to trust anybody.
She had been only fourteen years old by that time. And her "friends" made fun of her and posted all of her information in the social media.
Tamara had never felt so alone and humiliated in her life.
So betrayed...
That's when she decided that having no friends was better than giving someone enough power to destroy you.
"I need your help" She told her. Tamara could see the frown on Lucy's, she looked more confused than Tamara but nodded. Her hand still on Tamara's, her thumb rubbing soft and gentle circles on the teenager's knuckles.
Something in Lucy's aura made the younger one feel so secure.
And she knew Lucy wasn't like that, she wasn't like her friends but Tamara couldn't help it but still feel a little distrustful. She was aware Lucy wouldn't betray her but that's what she thought about her friends and see how it all ended. Maybe Lucy wouldn't even care and would kick her out. Tell her too get out her life.
Maybe she was being selfish... Tamara was aware of how much Lucy haves on her plate at the moment and she was just being selfish by dumping her own stupid problems on the older brunette.
But she had already opened her mouth, she had already talked and knew she could not lie to the cop, she had already tried and somehow Lucy always knew when she was not being honest.
It was irritating.
There wasn't much she could so now. She should have think all this through a little more but it was now too late.
So here goes nothing...
