Tim Bradford wasn't jealous. Not at all, he was just confused of when Chen decided that Angela was far more interesting than him. He had spent the whole night replaying their day together to see if he had said something stupid so Lucy had rather spent the next few days with Lopez than with him.
For all Bradford knew, he had done nothing wrong. But still felt like Lucy was mad at him and yes, he usually wouldn't care if one of his ex-rookies were mad at him or if they decided to stop talking to him but with Chen it just felt king of... personal?
He had noticed the change in Lucy's behavior. She went from a sassy ray of sunshine to being a tired and nervous stormy cloud. He knew Tamara has been having nightmares lately, Lucy had told him but she also told him the teenager was doing a little better now.
So if Boot wasn't waking up to Tamara's cries then what was going on?
His boot started talking lesser and lesser while before she would often rattle and ramble about nothing and everything. She also always looked lost in thought, he had been calling her out all day in their last patrol. So the OT decided he would confront her today.
"Chen!" He yelled as soon as he saw her coming in with Angela, obviously.
They were almost whispering, he could bearly hear them but by Lucy's body language he knew she was tense, anxious even. He could tell by the way her hand started fidgeting with the necklace she always has put on, it was what always gave her away, every time something was wrong she would either fidget with her own fingers
or play with the necklace.Lopez didn't say anything. She rolled her eyes at her conversation being interrupted and then give Lucy a small smile, squeezed her arm lightly and walk to her desk.
Before Chen could talk, the OT beat her to it.
"What the hell is going on with you?!" He exclaimed. Maybe not the beat way to broach the subject but at the moment Bradford couldn't bring himself to care.
"What? What are you talking about?" Lucy looked genuinely confused. Nothing was going on, well, not something involving to Tim.
"Then why all out of the blue you decided Lopez is better company than me. I thought we were fine. I know I cancelled our last date but I already explained you that I lost track of time in the meeting I was in, Lucy." He questioned and saw Lucy holding back a smirk, thing that made him roll his eyes.
Oh! So that is what this is about. Lucy thought. Tim was jealous! And in part, it made sense. It was true she had been spending more time with Angela than with him. But is was because of Tamara, both of them had been working together to find more information about the teen's past.
She should have told something to Tim, that's true. They weren't a couple, not yet at least but they had had a few dates to see where they lead them. And to be honest Lucy had been a little annoyed when Tim didn't show up to their last date. But they made amends when he came to her apartment the next day with a bouquet of flowers and chocolates in his hands.
She wasn't even mad, just annoyed. Although she would never reject free chocolate and flowers so they made amends.
Tamara gave her shit about the flowers and chocolate all the morning. Didn't stop teasing her until Chen left to the station, no one knew Tim and Lucy were trying to figure out what's going on between them, even them were sure on how to call it.
Besides telling someone else might jinx them. So Tamara was aware Lucy was seeing someone but not who.
"No, I'm not mad. She's just helping Tamara and I with something. I'm sorry I gave you the impression I was still mad." When she saw Bradford frown, Lucy knew she hadn't selected the best words. Tim was awfully protective of Tamara and now he knew she was in some kind of trouble.
She didn't have the time talk when Tim grabbed her by the wrist and started dragging her to the shop and made get in to then also get in and started driving.
"What's wrong with Tamara?" The OT asked after some minutes of silence, he waited till they met a red light to turned his head towards her and waited for an answer.
Lucy was debating in between telling him and not. He could could also help them, the more people the best, what was stopping her from telling him was that Tim knew how to read her better than anyone and that might force her to tell him about her daughter.
"Angela and I are helping her looking for her birth parents" The lack of words what uncharacteristic on Lucy.
"What are you talking about? I thought they were dead." To be honest Lucy was getting a little sick and tired of explaining the same thing over and over. First Lopez, then Nyla had somehow found out, maybe Tamara had told her, and now Tim.
With a sigh Lucy explained him everything and to her surprise he didn't interrupt her or said something, though she knew he was maybe mad? She wasn't sure by the way his grip had tighten on the steering wheel. Bradford actually didn't say something in a while now, something that started worrying Chen.
"You are thinking too loud. Are you okay? You're more quite than usual" She stated it had been a calm day so far. Just a failed bank robbery and an OD'd man in the street.
"I just... I don't understand why didn't you or Tamara tell me. I could help too, you know. I thought the two of us were close enough to you telling me you needed help. Because I car about your puppy too and I hope the two of you know that so I just can't comprehend why you felt the need to go first to Angela than me." His tone was surprisingly calm. Maybe just a tiny bit passive-aggressive but still pretty calm.
"It is not that we don't trust you I just know you are busy with Genny and the house and that you're not exactly having the best time lately." Lucy was quick to explain, her eyes looking at his hoping he could see the sincerity on them.
Tim nodded.
"Alright, I understand. But I want to help, okay? I know you and Tamara are having a hard time and if I can help I'll do it." His tone stubborn, letting his partner know there was no room left for discussion.
The rest of the day passed by, now with a quiet Lucy. Something that was awfully unusual and she knew it by the way Tim wouldn't stop throwing her side glances every now and then.
At some point of the noon she decided she would tell Tim she has a daughter. Has? Had? Technically she still was Elizabeth's mother, she gave birth to her after all but she unwillingly signed the parental rights away so she wasn't hers?
It wad all so confusing.
Tamara was staying at a friends house to study, she said, but Lucy knew that was a lie. They were probably only going to chat, eat and watch movies and usually Lucy would call her out on that. Part of the deal so Tamara's social worker would let the teen stay with Lucy was that she had to keep up the good grades but Lucy was also aware of how much effort Tamara has been putting on school the last couple of weeks so she let her be.
Besides she needed the house alone for what she was about to do.
She texted Tim to come over ASAP and fifteen minutes later she heard a knock on her door.
Taking a deep breath and drying her sweaty hands on her pants, Lucy stood up and walked to the door before opening it.
"Hi" She said quietly.
"Hello" Tim responded...
