"Hey! Hey kid get over here" Toby heard a man yell as he made his way to the library. It was just a short walk from his apartment.
"Baldy I'm talking to you!" Toby turned around and saw a older man running towards him. Or at least attempting too. The man seem to be stumbling around in his attempt to run.
"You look like trouble! Do you know who broke into my car last night? Hm?! I know it was a freak like you!" Toby could smell the alcohol on this man's breath as he yelled at him.
"Nah man I don't know what your talking abou-"
"Aw shove it that's what they all say! I know it was you! Now come here and empty your pockets!"
The older man grabbed at Toby. Toby took a few steps back just to watch the older man waddle after him. He found fun in doing this and continued to do it for nearly the whole block until something slammed into the back of his head. Nearly knocking him down.
"What the hell-"
"Im sorry! Oh Tobias-"Brooks looked up and saw the older man that was slowly running towards the two.
"Get behind me Tobias" brooks said as he effortlessly pushed Toby behind him.
"Wait no dude it's okay let's just get into the bookstore"
'What is this stupid ass doing?! Trying to get himself hurt?!'
The older man caught up to them. "Hello sir is there a problem?" Brooks asked. The older man stopped and had to nearly break his neck to look Brooks in the face.
"Er yeah that bald fellow over there broke into my car!"
"How do you know that as a fact sir? My friend here wouldn't do such a thing"
'You'd be surprised' Toby thought.
"Well erm just by looking at him I know! He's a punk!"
"Well then sir me and this so called punk are going to go study please have a good rest of your evening."
The old man turned around and waddled away.
'The hell just happened'. Toby thought.
"That looks like a good spot yeah?" Brooks said pointing to a table hidden behind a shelf of books.
The two sat down and Brooks pulled out his study supplies. Notebooks, highlighters, multicolored pens, laptop, etc.
Toby pulled about his broken pencil and a folder.
"So Tobias what did you need help with."
"The homework"
"For which class?"
"All of em"
"Oh okay.. must be because you weren't here right?"
"Um yeah sure"
Brooks handed Toby someone notes and homework that had already been graded.
"You know Tobias it might be better if i actually explained what these things were instead of you just coping it down."
"Nah man it's cool this is how I learn thing actually"
"Oh okay.."
Once toby was done copying the homework he'd realized that's all he came here to do.
But he felt no desire to leave. He'd never really been in such a nice environment.
It was warm and smelled nice due to the bakery next door. It was also very quiet all you could hear was the faint sound of the wind and Brooks snoring.
'Wait- he's sleeping?! Well I guess he did say he'd be coming from a game.'
Toby stared at the sleeping boy infront of him. But then grew slightly annoyed.
Toby wounded why he didn't turn out to be like Brooks. From day one Toby had been picked on by guys like Brooks. But instead of just taking it Toby fought back. But that seemed to scare people and everyone just saw him as a bad person. All because they weren't used to seeing someone fight back.
Toby did try to fit in when he was younger but it just never worked out. Girls would comment about his dirty face and unwashed clothes. And boys would pick on him for being to skinny and to short.
So eventually Toby stopped trying and just accepted that he was someone no one would like.
So he just did what bad people do, fighting, smoking, drinking, stealing, etc.
So when he'd sit down on a bus or choose a seat at school it didn't hurt him as much when he'd see people move as far away as they could from him. He'd grown used to it.
Why would they want to be close to him? They want to sit next to someone like Brooks.
Someone like Brooks wouldn't try to steal their phone and sell it to a crack head. Oh no, good little Brooks would help you find the damn phone-
"Tobias are you alright?
Toby snapped back to reality. "Hm yeah why do you ask?"
"Well your face was all bunched up and you broke your pencil."
Toby looked down at his balled up fist that was begging to drop blood. Great.
"Oh man your bleeding! We should take you to the hospital! You could have lead poisoning!"
"No man I'm fine I know how to handle this alright? It's not like this is my first time having to play doctor on myself."
"Why do you say that? Are you hurt often?" Brooks said staring at Toby with a worried expression.
Which just pissed Toby off even more.
"Uh no not at all.. I just don't wanna deal with going to the hospital but I'll get it check out later." Toby said as he got up.
"I'm gunna get going. I'll talk to you tomorrow."
Toby didn't wait for brooks to reply. He lit a cigarette as he walked.
"Hey Tobias wait up!" Brooks yelled as he ran to catch up with Toby.
'Aw great just awesome! Yes Brooks I would love for you to walk with me. Yeah right'
"Oh hey Brooks I actually live super close so there's no need to walk with me.."
"That's alright I just want to walk you home."
