Ari's POV…

“When are you coming back home?” Javan asked as soon as I said hello.

“I don't know yet,” I answered, leaving my mom and Lexi sitting on the sofa watching the twilight series Breaking Dawn.

“I don't see why you have to be there when your mom's life isn't in any immediate danger.”

“Can you not be an ass for one day, Javan?”

“I'm not being an ass, I'm just being honest about how I feel.”

“Well, you know what… you can take those honest feelings of yours and shove them up your ass when it comes down to me being here for my mom when she needs me the most.”

“I tell you what, if you're not back here in time for my draft pick to the… tomorrow night, we're over.”

“I'm sorry I probably won't be able to make it to your big day, Javan. It's not because I don't want to be there for you, it's just that my mom needs me the most right now.”

“Don't you think that you're being a bit over dramatic about your mom's situation and selfish?”

“Me... being selfish? Aren't you the one on the phone whining about me not being able to be there for you when you know that my mom's life is in danger? I would've never asked you to not take care of your parents just so I can have you around me for appearances, no matter how important the day was for me.”

“Wow, Ari, I never knew that you could be so damn cruel. You of all people know how important this day is to me. Fuck it, I'll bring my ex along to support me since you're too bus...” He was saying when I hung up the phone. I've always known Javan to be cruel and controlling, but not to this degree, and especially not when it came down to me spending time with my family.

“Did you fuckin hang up on me?” Javan texted when I refused to answer his call. Leaving him on read, I walked back into the living.

“Where's Lexi?” I asked mom after sitting on the sofa beside her.

“She went into the kitchen to pop us a fresh batch of popcorn and to grab a few other snacks. Is everything alright between you and Javan?”

“Yeah! How did you know that it was him on the phone, mom?”

“Because for the last couple of days whenever you get off the phone with him, you have this certain kind of look on your face, sweetie.”

“And exactly what look is that?”

“The kind you have on your face right now. You look sad, stressed, and like you're tired.”

“Everything between him and I is fine.” I lied with a forced smile.

“All I'm going to say honey is if you two aren't happy, maybe you and Javan should take a break from each other for a little while or at least until you figure out if your relationship is worth fighting for.”

“Enough talking about me and my relationship, how are you feeling, mom? Are you tired?” I asked, looking at her closely.
