Daisy Lynn POV

For as long as I could remember, all I wanted was to make sure I ended up nothing like my father. He was violent and angry and mean. I feared him, but also, regrettably, I loved him. Even years after his death, I still did.

I think that love is what made me strong. It kept me from being repulsed at my own reflection, even though I shared his blonde hair and blue eyes. Love brought me a new family — Jason, Myra, Ayana, Dziko, Ken, Sakima and Hunter. Love made me reject violence. I never wanted to learn how to fight, but life deemed it necessary. Jason and Myra taught me how to defend myself. The other elementals taught me how to defend others.

Despite my best efforts, I knew I had taken many lives. But it had always been an indirect consequence and never something I had done in cold blood. I knew we were in a war, after all. First it had been a war against the humans, to fight for our place in the world. Now, it was a war between Unknowns. The world was big enough for us all to co-exist, but after so many of us died fighting the humans, many Unknowns thought otherwise. Giovanna certainly did.

It was indisputable that she was the strongest Unknown alive right now. Her powers gave her the ability to warp people's perceptions of the world around them. She could magical energy to create an aura that was an impenetrable defense, as well as a powerful offense. Her aura could take any shape to form a weapon. At the moment, she'd gone even further than that — her aura was cast as far as the eye could see, blanketing the world around us and sucking anyone within into her illusions.

We elementals were very fortunate to have each other. Dziko had a natural resistance to Giovanna's magical hallucinations. Her ability to manipulate the earth meant that she was the most grounded out of all of us. Because our abilities were interconnect in ways none of us truly understood, so long as we were together, Dziko's resistance transferred to us. It wasn't full spectrum protection like a telepath could offer, but it we retained just enough of our senses to be able to fight against the illusion's effects.

I supposed it was another stroke of luck that Jason had been with us at the time of Giovanna's attack. He used his telepathy as a mental barrier, which blocked the aura entirely. It was easy to see that it was a strain on him to cover so many of us. Whatever we did next, we would need to do it quickly, before Jason's mind gave out. And before Giovanna could go any further in her plans to eradicate humanity in her vengeance.

Jason made sure we had a game plan. We tested out the strength of Dziko's resistance to the aura without his telepathy. It was enough, but just barely. If she was the anchor, Ayana was our chain. The rest of us were a ship floating in the water. So long as we remained connected, we would be fine.

We tracked Giovanna's true location down with a mix of Ayana's power and Jason's telepathy. There was no point in a stealthy approach. When we arrived, it was with all turbulence and force of mother nature. Ken whipped the winds into a suffocating tizzy. Entire trees uproot as he catapulted us high into the sky.
