It was amazing how some things can unfold without being known. Animals can start families without ever being seen by man. Wildflowers can grow and thrive while hidden underneath concrete. And two armies can fight a secret war against each other without any government even catching a whiff.
Red Army and Gray Army. Each headed by a leader shrouded in mystery and fueled by rumors of ruthlessness.
Nobody was sure when the war had started, and nobody knew if it would ever end. The specific reasons had been lost to history, boiling down to something short and simple.
World domination.
The soldiers' only goal, no matter which color they wore, was to help their leader achieve total control over the world. It was no argument that either army could easily overpower any world government. The only problem is that they were in each other's way. So for years now they had been locked in a gruesome rivalry, often ending in bloodshed. The soldiers were loyal.
Loyalty. It was a feeling I was familiar with. Being the Lieutenant, I was Gray Leader's right hand man. He shared with me his plans, his goals, and his thoughts. It was through him I gained my hatred of Red Leader and his men. I saw him through Gray's eyes, a narcissistic man who would trade the arms and legs of his soldiers without batting an eye if it meant he would gain something. He was incapable of feeling emotions with a heart of stone.
The people in the Gray Army had become my family. I laughed with them, cried with them, sweated with them. Some of them had seen me at my best and even more had seen me at my worst. They accepted me no matter who I was.
How did I gain my position? What made me so special that the cunning, strategic genius that was Gray Leader chose me to be by his side?
I couldn't give you the proper answer to that. It's an answer that I would like to hear.
But I never would.
(Short chapter, felt like it would be a fun little transition)
