*Veronica's POV*

I really needed that jean jacket from how cold the night weather is now and how it made my teeth clatter and my whole body shiver. Luckily for me on the weekends I do sleep in my clothes that I wore the night before. If I do have something special to do that weekend I do take a shower and put on normal pajamas. That was not this weekend.

The portal lead me to the back of the dog pound which had a bunch of stores really close around it and feeling suffocating just standing in between the back walls of the store and a random brick wall that separated the other stores behind it. I tip toed to the left side of it and looked both ways for any cars that could past by. It is 3:56 am, I would be surprised to see only one car, especially downtown.

I was thinking that the shop would be locked, but when I gave it a good tug it opened right up. "What the-?" I gasped.

I then heard Max's laugh echo in my head. "I made sure the locks were undone and the cameras were down, when I was sure the mutation was here."

With that note I took out my thin red flashlight and pointed it around the front of the store, where straight ahead was a big grey desk where people sign to adopt the dogs here. The left was not that interesting since there was only bathrooms and drinking fountains there. Above it were two cameras on the two corners pointing to the desk and the front entrance. The right side did catch my eye, from the entrance to the dogs were located.

I shined my light in-front of me as I walked through the earrie and scary looking hallway that had dog pictures hung near the front entrance that had Happy Birthday on the bottom of the pictures. Some dogs were 4, 5 even 10 and didn't look old or that big. There were only a few of them and I searched what rooms were cross the hallway. There was a clinic room right away, a bathroom on the other side and than at the end of the hall was the holding area and did have a strong smell to it.

Right away when I looked into the area, I saw that the strong aroma was from both the dogs cages, and the food that was left out near the entrance. I only shined the light down in the hall and not into the cage so none of the dogs would wake up and bark. They were all sleeping, curled up either alone or with some other dogs that probably were a family, and looked really cute in all.

I didn't find anything odd with any of them. I couldn't see if they acted strangely since I didn't want to wake them up. I thought it was going to be nothing until I reached the end of the whole room and saw to my right, that one dog was still awake, and even quiet. It was sitting in the corner and his whole body facing the wall with it in his normal dog cute and ominous sitting position with his paws on the ground and legs bent.

I bent down to the level of it's cage and turned off my flashlight. The moonlight that was coming into the windows of each of the dogs cages was enough for me to see the dog enough.

"Hi." I whispered, sweetly and lightly tapping the cage door.

"What's your name?" I asked. Most of the dogs that were here had their names on their cages and pictures on the wall. After taking a good look he was not on the wall and he did not have a name on it's cage either.

"Are you okay?" I wondered, wanting it to turn his face at me, or anything.

I have never had a dog. My parents were too busy with their jobs to have one when we were younger, and when we moved into the apartment we learned that dogs weren't allowed. I do know that they need to eat, like any other living being. I quietly rushed next to the entrance where the dog food bags laid and scooped some out on this scooper spatula and went back to the dogs cage.

"Hey, hey. You hungry?" I waved the food. "I got some food for you." I checked the inside of the cage for it's food bowl and I eventually found it, but not in whole. It looked like it got torn to pieces, it was big grey pieces that were in the corner near the door of the cage.

"Oh wow." I gasped quietly and looked back to the dog who was now standing on all four feet, and growling that made foam leak out of his mouth.

"Oh hi!" I jumped and accidentally dropped the scoop with the food as I fell onto my butt. The noise of the food pellets made some of the sleepy dogs start barking and the odd one rush to the cage door and started to bark as well.

"Uh oh." I whispered, getting back up on my feet.

"I have an idea." Max appeared by the entrance of the room.

"What?" He walked towards me and in front of the odd dogs cage.

"It could have noticed your magic later than other villains. Now it is drawn and would go anywhere to get it."

"What are you saying?" I asked, feeling heat of anxiety course through my body.

"I open the cage, it wouldn't want me above your magic, so it would come at you and you can open a portal to some place else where it can be held at." My heart sunk from many things that were said.

"But I don't know if I can just make a portal out if no where yet." I mentioned.

"You did it before."

I scoffed. "That could be a one off."

"Veronica, you are the only magical I have known or in history of magic that could make portals out of your hand. You can make the rules now." I hadn't thought about it like that. I can do what I want. No one else can tell me what or how I can use it. Max's pep talk did help me feel more confident about the whole thing, and give me and idea on where to go.

"Okay, let's do it." I say with Max nodding and getting ready to open the dog's cage door.

I rushed over to the entrance, seeing all of the dogs that were barking and near their own doors while the odd dog could not get his eyes off of me. I steadied my breath and calmed down knowing Max is here and my idea of the place and than said. "You got it?"

He nods, "Yup. You ready?"

I nod slightly. "Nope, but it doesn't matter. I got to do it."

"Okay. Here we go!" He yells before opening up the door, letting out the dog. It did run out of it's cage, but randomly stopped in the middle of the room between the dog cages that were rattling from the dogs bumping into it and barking loud.

I was confused at first what it was going to do, but the weird movement of the legs, arms, and even head gave it away that he was transforming into his mutation form.
