Varun

A gush of humid air brushed over my face as I walked inside. Kriya's house looked the same, except a little messed up now. Happy memories flooded my head as I impulsively walked to the balcony, our favorite place.

"Let's sit and talk Varun."

I quickly snapped back to reality and seated myself. She said on the chair opposite to me. There was a certain sadness that washed over her face. Her eyes weren't glowing with the same excitement anymore on seeing me, the corners of her mouth didn't curl up in a smile on seeing me and the reasons were quite obvious. I was determined to get her back and nothing could stop me.

"How are you?" I asked nervously, knowing very well what the answer would be.

"Seriously Varun? I am exactly how a woman is supposed to me after being cheated on."

I sighed. There was no time for small talks and awkward conversations. I took a deep breath and begun the most important talk of my life.

"Kriya, I know you are hurt. You must know that what you saw was nothing but a misunderstanding."

Her eyes widened with suspicion but I continued anyways.

"Her name is Yukthi, my first girlfriend. We were together for a while before we broke up. I didn't feel emotionally connected to her like I do with you. We called off our relationship long before we were together. That day, she had come to visit me and wanted to reconcile with me. She got emotional and started crying. What you saw was a snippet of what took place on that fateful day. She hugged me and I was just trying to console her as a friend. I was going to push her away but then you saw us.

This can seem like an excuse to you Kriya but this is exactly what happened. I told Yukthi about us and made it crystal clear that I love you."

Kriya sat looking disheveled and utmost shock. I proceeded to tell her everything, how Yukthi and I started dating, how we broke up, under what circumstances and how I felt. I didn't leave out a single detail.

"I know that you were hurting but I came back for you; I waited, left texts, but nothing. You just disappeared and I felt helpless."

I looked down at the floor feeling a tight knot in my stomach. We sat in utmost silence for some time and when I looked up, tears brimmed her eyes. I tried to reach out to her hand but she pulled it back. Maybe she still did not trust me, but I was not going to give up so easily.

"Varun, how do I believe you? I was in so much pain Varun I....."

Her voice cracked and she broke down. I couldn't see her like this and knowing I am the reason for her condition made me sick to the stomach.

"Kriya, you have to trust me," I said, kneeling beside her chair and holding her hands. She tried to get rid of my grip but I was not ready to let her go.

"Varun please you don't understand".

"I do Kriya. You know what hurt me? The fact that you did not trust me at all. I thought we loved each other but you did not give me a single chance to explain myself?

I love you Kriya, I really do."
