I started last year as I did many years before - with the misconception that I was an aquatic shifter. This notion started in elementary school, where I had started my investment in folklore and mythical creatures. Merfolk and marine life have been a comfort of mine pretty much since birth. Even as a toddler I would ask to have a bath all the time, even when we went to other people's houses. This, along with many other experiences, lead to the long held belief of mine that I now know is untrue. But, how did I go about changing such an ingrained belief in myself?
I would like everyone to try to do some self reflection this year. Without judgment from others - I know at least one person that will hate on me vehemently for this discovery about myself. I would also like the supernatural community to become more accepting of people making new discoveries about themselves, such as changing what species they believe themselves to be. Anyways - self reflection is one of the best tools we have to make progress in our journeys. I made that small realization that I stop wanting to be in the water 24/7 once the temperatures drop. Remember to ask yourself "why" questions. For me, asking "why would an aquatic creature stop wanting to be in the water just because it got a little colder" was the main factor that turned me away from aquatic supernaturals. With this question, I also started to question my other experiences that I thought were aquatic related. Is it that aquatic creatures enjoy my presence, or is it just animals in general? Spoiler, it is animals in general.Going into this new year, be sure to accept yourself as what you are. Do not force yourself to be someone you aren't. Even if you are using spells or subliminal to try to change your species or gain abilities, be sure to do so because you would genuinely be happier like that, not because you think it will solve all your problems (it won't, but that's something for another day). There is always an opportunity to change your life for the better, you just have to step through the door.
