After Neteyam and Tuk left, I was left with this strange feeling in my body that I couldn't explain. My heart beat fastened and my breathing got heavier. I shook it off and went to my home, where I saw Ao'nung thinking about something.
Neteyam's POV:
As we were walking to our home to get ready for dinner, Tuk was constantly blabbing about Neomi. "You should get to know her" ; "I see the way you look at her" ; "you would look cute together" she teased. I swear, I wanted to smack her in the spot.I hate to admit it, but she was right, I do look at Neomi some type of a way. I mean, how could I not, she had the perfect eyes and a perfectly sculpted face. I admire how good she is with animals. But I'm here to learn their ways, not to fall in love or something similar.
I have to make my father proud and fill in his shoes. It was hard but I tried the best I could. Most of the time, it wasn't enough for him.
Neomi's POV:
"What is it" I asked him. "I, do you think Kirri likes boys?" He asked with sadness noticeable in his voice. "If it's the right one. Yeah I think." I said comforting him. I gave him a hug afterwards. "If it's meant to be, it will happen. Don't worry." I said with a calm voice. "Now come on we have to get to dinner before mom and dad yell at us again". We stood up and walked to dinner together, laughing on our way there. When we arrived, we saw everyone already sitting at the table, which was filled with food on it. Me and Ao'nung both sat down and we all started to eat. "So, big brother. Has anyone caught your eye in these past days here" Lo'ak started the conversation. "I don't know, but tell me bro, how are you and Tsireya doing" he teased back. I know I say this every time he speaks, but his accent really is to die for. I could listen to him talking every day.
"I know what's going on." Tuk said, we all looked at her. "Lo'ak is with Tsireya, Neteyam is with Neomi and Kirri... Kirri can be with Ao'nung." We all looked at each other and started to laugh. But we all knew deep down she could be telling the truth.
After dinner, I went for a swim. I haven't had time for myself in a long time. It was great to have that time again. I dove into the water and started to swim through the corals which were glowing in the dark. They emitted this beautiful turquoise-glow in the dark colour. I brightened the bottom of the sea.
The water was so calm and non moving, it brought how to my heart. I swam to the bottom of the sea and grabbed some seashells that I'll add to some of my tops or maybe even make a necklace out of them.
I was about to swim back to the beach, when I saw a bright light from under the corals. I swam in its direction and saw this weird screwdriver-like thing with a bright red and white light on the top of it. I have never seen anything like that before.
Neteyam's POV:
We finished dinner and everyone went home, except for Neomi. I have this feeling that she's always planning something, but u can't figure out what. When we came home, me and my family had a meeting. We all gathered in our home and my father started to lecture us, how it's important to stay out of trouble. Lo'ak didn't pay attention to his words. Jake ended the meeting by saying "sully stick together", which was something he would say before war or to calm us down.
We had to repeat after him, twice. Kirri however, she said it one time, giving it an extra tone of sadness. I wonder what's up with her. But that's a story for another time.
Tuk was thirsty and asked my mother for water. "Mommy, I'm thirsty can I have some water" she said giving her puppy eyes. "The box with the water is empty. Neteyam!" She called for me, "can you go fill this up with water" she asked, giving me the empty box.
I took the box and went to the fountain from where, all the Metkayina people got their water from. It was very close to the sea. I saw something moving in the water, or someone. She jumped out of the water and did a backflip, impressive. It was Neomi, I'm guessing she went for a swim after dinner.
I saw her lurking on the surface of the water and waved at her. She waved at me back and motioned that I should come and join her. "I have to give the water to Tuk!" I said loud enough so she could hear me. She nodded her head and went straight back in the water.
I hurried up and ran back to my home, where Tuk was already waiting for me. I gave her the box and yelled "I'm going for a swim". "Okay, just don't be late" my mother answered me.
I ran to where I was before and dove right into the water without any second thoughts. I saw Neomi at the bottom of the sea. 'What is she doing?' I thought to myself and swam to her.
Neomi's POV:
I felt a pair of hands on my head almost giving me a heart attack. I quickly turned around and to my surprise, there he was. Neteyam was smiling at me. I could look at his face for forever and never get tired of it.'Let's ride Ilus together. I can show you how it's done' I said in our so-called 'finger talk'. Oh right, they don't know it yet. I took Neteyam by surprise and grabbed his hand. I swam back to the surface while holding onto his hand.
"Let's ride Ilus, I can teach you how to do so" I said taking a breath. "Gladly" Neteyam said with a sparkle in his big yellow eyes.
We swam back to the beach and I called an Ilu. It was there in no time. I got her ready and told Neteyam what to do. "Go onto her back in a comfortable position and once you're ready, make the bond" I instructed him with a soft voice.
He did as instructed. He made the bond and I warned him that it's important to hold very hard onto her. He nodded and I smacked the Ilu's butt and she started to move forward at a very high speed.
It took Neteyam by surprise and he fell of the Ilu that was swimming through the water.
I chuckled at Neteyam and he blushed. I noticed that he was embarrassed. "We'll have you ever tried to climb a tree" he said in his defence. "I actually have. Yesterday, I didn't stumble over a root. I tried to climb a tree, you can assume how that went." I said giving the last sentence a chuckle.
"Do you want me to teach you how to properly climb a tree" he offered giving me the serious yet flirty look. Uhhh, there it was again. His accent, it really made me go head over heals for him. "I'd love that" I said looking back at him, trying to stay as calm as I could.
We went back to the beach and sat on the sand for a while. We talked about all kinds of things. "So, I saw that you're really good with animals." He said breaking the silence. "Yeah I have a few of them. Tuk seems to like them a lot." I said while smiling. "Tuk talks about you all the time. How great, pretty and funny you are" he said. It melted my heart. I loved Tuk. In such a small amount of time I grew to like her so much.
"Do you have a boyfriend" Neteyam asked out of the blue. It made the tension between us a bit awkward. "No, I've been too busy with taking care of the animals and teaching you our ways" I teased him and bumped his arm playfully. He smirked and scoffed at me.
"So how was life back in the forest?" I asked him seriously. "It was great. We would go into these 'mini wars' with the sky people every other day. I was never bored, but always a little bit scared. Back home, I was expected to live up to my father. He is known as 'Toruk Makto' one of the best warriors known in the forest. I had to do that while keeping eyes on my siblings. The pressure was overwhelming, so I'm happy to be here." He said. I feel sorry for him, I mean I know how it is, but still.
"I'm sorry" I said, genuinely being sorry. "Oh, it's not your fault" he said making eye contact with me. "Tomorrow after breakfast, okay?" he said. "What?" I said lost. "Teaching you how to climb a tree." he added while lightly smirking at me. I nodded softly and in that moment someone called Neteyam's name.
"Neteyam!" was heard from his home. "Coming mother" he said and I noticed that his ears twitched. He stood up and we said our goodbyes.
I went home to my bed. The best part of the day, sleep.
