Chapter 08

The sounds of hysterical laughter and the pounding of footsteps were sounds that I could distinctly hear above my own blood-curling scream. I ran out of my room hurriedly after I caught sight of the cockroach while screaming. So, now I was standing just outside of my bedroom door with pure fright coursing through me. Would you please shut yourself, my wolf growled at me with amusement lacing her words. My wolf had always been frustrated with me with regards to my fear of cockroaches. Even so, it still amused her whenever she witnessed my very reaction at the sight of the said bug.

I quickly shut my own mouth as I firmly put my hands above it. I was shivering. That was how terrified I was of cockroaches. The nasty fantasies of the bug that Kai-Ren and Jake had implanted into me from young, and my very own bad experience soon after had made me grown an intense fright over it.

Nicko quickly ran towards me, genuine concern clouding his face as he grabbed my shoulders gently, "What's the matter?" I could not reply for I know I would bite on my own words, hence, I only pointed at the thing that caused me to tremble like a leaf.

Nicko looked at my pointed finger in puzzlement before comprehension dawned upon him. He let out a long sigh of relief before giving me an amused grin. He released his hands on my shoulders and went over to the bug, picked it up with his bare hands and flicked it out of the window of the room. He then passed by me to go the washroom. I could hear the running of the tap water, indicating that he was washing his hands.

When he came out, he pulled me into his embrace, "It's gone already, Kai-Ren. Shh," Nicko cooed.

I could feel my shivers subsiding slowly, and embarrassment started to consume me. I could not believe that I was in Nicko's arms; a man whom I am not close with was actually comforting me. And, he was comforting me as if I was a girl. Not that I was not, but in his eyes, I was supposed to be a male after all. I pulled myself out of the embrace while chuckling nervously. I rubbed my neck a little, "err. Sorry about the commotion, and thanks," I said awkwardly.

"No problem, Kai-Ren. That's what fa- I mean, friends are for," Nicko replied with a huge smile, "anyway, dinner's all ready already. Could you help me bring it into the living room? Jake's no help for he's still rolling on the floor laughing." As Nicko said that, he pointed in the direction of Jake.

True to his words, when I turned, I caught sight of Jake still rolling on the floor with tears pouring freely down his cheeks from laughing too hard. At his laughter, I finally understood that the cockroach was his revenge prank for when I embarrassed him in Hannah's class earlier. Even if it was for revenge, and I know I should accept it instead of being a sore loser, using the very object of my fear was nasty.

"Sure, I'll help you, Nicko. Just ignore the idiot down there," I huffed in reply. I walked ahead towards the kitchen with Nicko trailing behind me.

In the middle of the kitchen, atop of the kitchen island, there were three plates of hot steak with fries by its side. I could feel saliva pooling in my mouth and gulped loudly. The smell was so aromatic that my stomach let out a growl in agreement. Nicko laughed behind me as he heard my stomach's complaint of not being fed.

"You can carry two plates. I'll carry the other one and the cutleries. I already set out some sodas for us," Nicko instructed.

I simply nodded at that and carried the two plates out of the kitchen and brought it to the living room table. As I set the plates down, I glanced at Jake to see that he had finally calmed down, though he was still lying on the floor. I stood up and kicked him, "are you finally dead?"
